Assess, assess, assess! Before you do anything major to the garden or landscape, assess the situation! Lawns, trees, shrubs, perennials and more will need attention after the wrath of this past winter.

Loving your lawn? Maybe not after this winter! It's time to rake away debris and take a look at your lawn. Bare spots need to be seeded to keep weeds at bay. Select seed that matches the site - sunny areas need a sunny grass seed mixture, and so on. BTW - it's still too early to apply a pre-emergent crabgrass control.

If your dull, lifeless planters need a shot in the arm, add pansies, ranunculus and spring flowering favorites - daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths - for instant color (after a white, white winter).

Elderberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries can all be planted now in the garden. Full sun and well-drained soils are best for maximum yield. Yum!

Don't guess, soil test! Bring in a cup of dry soil from your garden or lawn and we'll test it for free. Learn more.

It's time to plant peas directly in the garden - full sun and well drained soil. Peas will need support to grow and climb; plant next to a fence, trellis, obelisk or cage.

Remove snow stakes and store them.

If you haven't already, cut back ornamental grasses NOW, before you growth begins.

What's going on in the April garden?

Gerbera is one of those 'happy plants. Just one look and you're guaranteed to smile. Big, daisy-like flowers in shades of pink, red, orange, yellow and white, gerberas are best suited to indoor culture until mid-May when they easily transition to landscape beds and borders or favorite planters. Provide full-sun and well-drained soils. Helpful hints: use pruners to remove faded blooms to encourage more. When you replant in the garden or pots, make certain that you don't plant too deeply (or rot can become a big problem).

Pssst. . .Another little known but worth mentioning benefit, Gerbera is regarded as a clean air plant. Research states that gerbera can reduce certain air pollutants.
Ready to dive into your outside garden chores? Before you do, think about those muscles that have enjoyed a long winter respite. (Some will argue that they had their share of exercise by shoveling all that snow this past winter!) Digging, weeding, planting - you'll be using muscles that have been 'dormant' for several or more months. Ease yourself back into things - a little daily stretching of the arms and legs goes a long way before you head outside. Try not to tackle everything at once; make your 'to-do list' and prioritize. Even large chores can be broken down into manageable pieces. Think moderation; the chores will still be there waiting for you.

Perfect for your holiday table or as a thoughtful gift, an incredible assortment of colorful blooming plants has arrived. Traditional Easter and Oriental lilies, gardenias, primroses, freesias, hydrangeas, azaleas, gerbera daisies, Rieger begonias, orchids and so many more, in bud and bloom, are available! As always, we will gladly foil and wrap your gift plants, at no additional charge. We are open Easter Sunday and every day - 8am to 6pm.
Peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, plums, pears, blackberries, raspberries and grapes have arrived at Martin Viette. Finally, it's time to plant them in the garden. You don't need acres of land to grow and enjoy backyard fruits. They're fun and easy to grow when you know a few necessary do's and don'ts:

-Lots of sunshine! Do provide at least 6 hours of full sun every day; never plant in shady locations.

-Wet soils are a must to avoid! Don't plant in areas where the soil is frequently wet or puddled. Do plant in well-drained soil that's been amended with compost or composted manure.

-Air circulation is important; avoid planting where air is stagnant.


There are still a few days left to see the breathtaking Macy's Flower Show! 'Art in Bloom', the 2015 theme for the Show, is thrilling visitors with tens of thousands of colorful flowers and foliage - right in Herald Square. Enjoy the ever popular store windows on Broadway that dazzle the visitor with amazing scenery! Ireland Gannon Associates is proud to be part of the creative team for the Chicago Macy's show, too. The show is open through this Saturday, April 4th.

The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. We ask for your help throughout the winter by donating non-perishable food items.
