You know it's spring when the heaths arrive at Martin Viette! Formally known as Erica carnea, many people refer to these plants as "heather", which is an umbrella term covering both heath and heather. While heath refers specifically to the genus Erica, which blooms in late winter to early spring; heather refers to the genus Calluna, which blooms in late summer into early fall.
Heaths are hardy, low-growing little shrubs that pack a lot of color, especially when planted en masse in an open, sunny area. Available in white, pink, and reddish-purple, Heath is very versatile in its uses. They are well suited to the front of borders, especially to cover the base of leggier shrubs. They're also great as groundcovers, for rock gardens, slopes, and container planters. Heaths prefers full sun and soils that are well drained and acidic, but are quite adaptable to part shade and neutral to slightly alkaline soils. They're great companions to spring blooming shrubs like forsythias, azaleas and rhododendrons, as well as bulbs such as Narcissus (daffodils), Muscari (grape hyacinth), and Hyacinths.
Another great attribute to heaths is their low maintenance qualities. Light shearing off the top after flowering promotes good branching for their first few seasons. After that, they generally don't need to be fussed with. They're not a hungry plant either; a little Holly-Tone or bone meal early in spring will keep them going strong. A few words to the wise: avoid high nitrogen fertilizers. Also, proper watering is critical. Never allow them to dry out completely; an inch of water per week is ideal.

Peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, plums, pears, blackberries, raspberries and grapes have arrived at Martin Viette. Finally, it's time to plant them in the garden. You don't need acres of land to grow and enjoy backyard fruits. They're fun and easy to grow when you know a few necessary do's and don'ts:
-Lots of sunshine! Do provide at least 6 hours of full sun every day; never plant in shady locations.
-Wet soils are a must to avoid! Don't plant in areas where the soil is frequently wet or puddled. Do plant in well-drained soil that's been amended with compost or composted manure.
-Air circulation is important; avoid planting where air is stagnant.
