Jade plant, aka Crassula ovata, is a tough, low maintenance succulent that's native to South Africa (it's used as an evergreen shrub in their landscapes). Grown as a houseplant on Long Island, jades are hardy in zones 9-13, we are considered zone 7.
Prized for its fleshy green leaves (some varieties are variegated), jades grow best in very bright light (direct in winter) and well-drained potting soils. It's best to water thoroughly, and then allow the soil to dry between waterings. Too much water or poor soil drainage is a sure death sentence! Beautiful mature plants will flower in winter and spring. Transition jades outside after Memorial Day; never place in direct sun or they will sunburn (early morning sun, afternoon shade is desirable). Return indoors just after Labor Day. Jades are not heavy feeders; fertilize, sparingly, during the growing season.
Uses: dish gardens or specimen year round; outside in summer planters.

Peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, plums, pears, blackberries, raspberries and grapes have arrived at Martin Viette. Finally, it's time to plant them in the garden. You don't need acres of land to grow and enjoy backyard fruits. They're fun and easy to grow when you know a few necessary do's and don'ts:
-Lots of sunshine! Do provide at least 6 hours of full sun every day; never plant in shady locations.
-Wet soils are a must to avoid! Don't plant in areas where the soil is frequently wet or puddled. Do plant in well-drained soil that's been amended with compost or composted manure.
-Air circulation is important; avoid planting where air is stagnant.
