If you can get to your fruit trees or grapes, it's time to prune.

Sleeping bulbs - daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and more - are well insulated under many inches of snow. As soon as it disappears (when?), signs of life should appear.

Inventory all garden tools so you are 'ready to go' in spring. Do any needed repairs or buy new.

Houseplants hate cold drafts; keep away from doors and windows if possible.

Inspect houseplants for any signs of pests - spider mites, mealy bugs, aphids. If found, use a recommended insecticide - organic and chemical remedies exist. Ask us; we can help.

Dreaming about spring? 29 days and counting. . .

What's going on in the February garden?
You've been waiting for their annual arrival at Martin Viette and they're here - in glorious bud promising their amazing blooms!

Just before many spring-flowering plants put forth their long-awaited display of color, Camellia japonica delights with glorious early and mid-seasonal blooms. And speaking of blooms - look for varieties that are single, semi-double, double, or anemone-like or peony-like, in pure white or shades of pinks, reds with blotching, tinting or streaking.

Considered one of the 'old standards' in southern gardens, Japanese camellia can be grown on Long Island in Zone 7. For best results, plant in a sheltered, protected location that affords some partial shade from intense sun. Japanese camellias are well suited for planting around foundations, borders, fences and walls. You can grow camellias in planters, providing that the planters can be left out of doors all year round and there's adequate room for soil.

You'll be rewarded with healthy happy camellias if you spend time preparing the soil before planting. A soil that is moist, yet well drained; acidic (have the pH tested); and abundant with organic matter is ideal. Most soils need and benefit from added compost or composted manure, so don't skimp on soil amendments. Work them in prior to planting.

Helpful tips for growing Japanese camellias: Maintain adequate soil moisture; an inch of water (or rain) per week should be adequate during the growing season. Pay attention to possible summer droughts and water as needed; never allow the soil to go bone dry. Due to their shallow roots, two inches of mulch should be applied over the planting area (but not against the trunk of the plant) to help retain needed soil moisture. A little extra TLC during the winter months can go a long way to protecting those beautiful spring-blooming buds. Consider wrapping plants, especially if in exposed locations, with burlap. In addition, they require little, if any, pruning. If you need to prune, it's best to do so right after flowering.

February is National Bird Feeding Month! During the lean days of winter, when natural food is generally unavailable, birds rely on us to supply needed food. Here's why. Birds lose up to 30% of their energy by fluffing their feathers 'to stay warm' during cold days and nights. (It's like wrapping a blanket around you when it's cold!) Sometimes you'll notice birds shivering. They do this to readjust their body temperature from cold to warm, and this, too, takes energy. We can help birds during the winter months by feeding them. And once you start, don't stop until natural food - like insects and seeds - become available later in spring. So, take a look at your birdfeeder. Got birdseed?
