Picture perfect orchids! Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly called moth orchids, are native to India and Southeast Asia. These ever-so-popular orchids are among the easiest to grow! Lucky for us, Phalaenopsis are available in bud and bloom 12 months of the year with amazing flowers that last 6-8 weeks at a time. Well grown, mature plants, may be in flower for up to 3-4 months.
Easy to love and care for, Phalaenopsis need filtered sunlight for flowering. In winter and spring, west windows are the most desirable; east windows are best during the higher light intensity of summer. Well-grown plants generally have yellow-green leaves. In fact, dark green leaves usually indicate that more light is needed, especially for flowering. Night temperatures of 60-65o F are ideal for this warm growing orchid. Daytime temperatures should stay close to 80-85o F. Watering: The potting media should not be allowed to become bone dry. Water thoroughly and then allow the media to dry slightly between waterings. If you can increase the humidity, that's always beneficial.

February is National Bird Feeding Month! During the lean days of winter, when natural food is generally unavailable, birds rely on us to supply needed food. Here's why. Birds lose up to 30% of their energy by fluffing their feathers 'to stay warm' during cold days and nights. (It's like wrapping a blanket around you when it's cold!) Sometimes you'll notice birds shivering. They do this to readjust their body temperature from cold to warm, and this, too, takes energy. We can help birds during the winter months by feeding them. And once you start, don't stop until natural food - like insects and seeds - become available later in spring. So, take a look at your birdfeeder. Got birdseed? |

The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. We ask for your help throughout the winter by donating non-perishable food items. A collection bin is located outside the main doors at Martin Viette's. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
