February is national bird feeding month! Remember our feathered friends; keep bird feeders stocked and fresh water available.

Did you plant spring-flowering bulbs last fall? If so, think of all this snow cover as great insulation for these soon-to-be (relatively speaking) flowering beauties.

If you can get through the snow, cut a few branches of forsythia for indoor forcing. Place cut branches in water and presto - yellow flowers should begin to appear within a week or two.

Start a gardening journal for notes, thoughts, images, seed packets, and labels for the 2015 gardening year. It's impossible to remember from year to year what performed well and what didn't.

As tempting as it might be, do NOT attempt to remove ice from plants - especially evergreens. More harm, than good, will likely occur!

Days are getting longer - really! That should inspire you to think about what to grow in the late winter/early spring vegetable garden. Seeds and all seed starting supplies have arrived at Martin Viette!

Dreaming about spring? 43 days and counting. . .

What's going on in the February garden?
Afraid of spiders? Understandable if they're the 8-legged kind! We're talking about spider plants, formally known as Chlorophytum comosum, a South Africa native.

Easy to grow, spiders grow best in bright, indirect light. Never full sun or they will sunburn. Hardy in Zones 9-11 (think Florida), we enjoy spiders inside year 'round, or summers outdoors on Long Island. Keep the potting soil barely moist; its fleshy, succulent roots act as water storage units for the plant. Excessive water will cause the roots to rot; plant to decay.

Helpful hints: Repot only when needed. A split or cracked pot is a good indicator for repotting! Use a well-drained potting soil. Spiders are not heavy feeders; fertilize during the growing season; read and follow package directions. Want to multiply your spider collection? They are easily propagated by runners (although experienced growers will propagate from seed).

Everyone always asks about the brown tips on the leaves of spiders. They're commonly caused by: lack of humidity, excessive salts (by-product of fertilizers - best to leach the soil with water whenever you water), or fluoride found in some drinking waters.

Uses: hanging baskets, table top year round; summer planters, hanging baskets, and window boxes.

Did you know? Based on a NASA study (yes, the space people), spider plants are considered clean air plants. According to a study done by Dr. Bill Wolverton, 'spiders' were found to pull select pollutants from the air of indoor homes or office spaces.

We've got a cure for that! All concrete urns and concrete planters are on sale. Buy a pair and save 25%.
