COLD! Plants are getting a true taste of winter's frigid grip. Iced plants should be left alone or damage could result. If you MUST remove snow from plants, do so - gently! - with a soft broom.

Add a flowering houseplant - African violet, orchid or cyclamen - to the home to cure the winter blues.

Days are getting slightly longer! That should inspire you to think about what to grow in the late winter/early spring vegetable garden. Seeds have arrived at Martin Viette!

Remember our feathered friends; keep bird feeders stocked and fresh water available.

What's going on in the January garden?
This houseplant is all about the leaves! Aluminum Plant, aka Pilea cadierei, is prized for its splashy aluminum-colored markings on attractive green leaves. Native to China and Vietnam, AP is hardy in zone 9 and warmer (think Florida). On Long Island, we grow AP indoors from September through May. You can keep it indoors year 'round or give it a summer vacation.

AP grows best in bright or medium indirect light; never in full sun or leaves will sunburn! Soil should be kept barely moist - never soggy or bone dry. Fertilize regularly (according to package directions) during the growing season. Repot when pot bound; use a well-drained potting soil. Uses: terrariums, table top, outside summer planters.

Did you know? Some gardeners will use AP in summer planters; its leaves add a nice kick of texture and interest! Leggy plants can be 'pinched' to create a fuller, bushier plant.
It will soon be time to start late winter/early spring vegetable, herb and annual flowers from seed indoors. Fresh vegetable, herb and flowers seeds - including heirloom and organic varieties - have arrived at Martin Viette. 'Lights, Camera, Bloom!' is the theme of the 2015 Philadelphia Flower Show! Martin Viette Nurseries is chartering three coach buses to attend this world renowned flower show on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. The coaches will leave Martin Viette in East Norwich at 9am and return at approximately 9pm. Advanced registration and payment is an absolute must and on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the trip (coach, entrance ticket to the flower show, gratuity & light refreshments on the way home) is $89.00 per person. The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. We ask for your help throughout the winter by donating non-perishable food items. A collection bin is located outside the main doors at Martin Viette's. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
