When it's cold outside. . .that means only one thing - it's time to enjoy your fireplace or wood-burning stove. Firewood tips: bring in only a few days worth of wood at a given time. Your wood supply should be accessible to a nearby door, stacked and covered. Need firewood? We have split seasoned wood, rings and fire starters. For your convenience, delivery can be easily arranged!

Days are getting slightly longer! That should inspire you to think about what to grow in the late winter/early spring vegetable garden.

Keep houseplants away from frosty and drafty windows and doors.

Still too early to fertilize houseplants; wait until late February.

Saving your amaryllis bulb? Allow the strappy leaves to mature (yellow) before removing them.

Remember our feathered friends; keep bird feeders stocked and fresh water available.

Dreaming about spring? 71 days and counting. . .

What's going on in the January garden?
Ficus elastica 'Burgundy', aka 'Burgundy' rubber plant or 'Burgundy' fig', is a member of the Moraceae (fig) family. Unlike the hardy fruiting figs that we enjoy on Long Island, 'Burgundy' is hardy zones 10-11 (think Miami!) On Long Island, it is grown as an indoor houseplant that can spend the summers outdoors.

'Burgundy' is easy to grow and easy to enjoy. The saying 'less is more' holds true - water when the soil is slightly dry, and provide medium to bright light to encourage the desirable burgundy coloration in the leaves. (Large leaves can be dust magnets; wipe with a soft, moist cloth.) Feed during the growing season; read and follow label directions! Repot only when needed.

Did you know? 'Burgundy' is native to the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, South America & India. References have labeled this plant as poisonous.
Even with good care, poinsettias can lose their appeal (or leaves!) after the holidays are over. It's time to swap that tired poinsettia for some year 'round houseplant enjoyment. Cleaning the air or beautifying a room, we know that houseplants add so much to indoor spaces - homes, dorms or offices - 365 days a year. So, bring us your old poinsettias (doesn't matter how many or if you bought them elsewhere!) and we'll give you 20% off your purchase of any regularly priced houseplant (one or multiple) that same day. Offer good through January 31st, 2015.
