2015 - a new year for enjoying all things gardening has just begun. New seeds to start, new plants to grow - it's a clean slate! Good gardeners know to revisit the successes and disappointments of previous gardening years. (Did you start a garden journal?) Make a resolution not to repeat plants or gardening practices that didn't work out. Need some gardening help? The staff at Martin Viette is committed to help you make 2015 your best year yet.
Keep houseplants happy - rotate regularly to keep them uniform and not 'reaching' for sunlight.

Remove spent flowers from Amaryllis, but allow the leaves to mature.

Stay off frozen turf as much as possible! If you cut across the lawn, your footprints will tell the tale come spring.

Check stored bulbs - dahlias, elephant ears, and cannas - for any signs of rot. If found, discard.

Dreaming about spring? 78 days and counting. . .

What's going on in the January garden?
Dracaena godseffiana 'Florida Beauty' (synonym: Dracaena surculosa 'Florida Beauty'), is commonly known as the Gold Dust Plant or Gold Dust Dracaena. Native to west tropical Africa, 'Florida Beauty' is hardy in Zones 9-11 - think Miami. We grow it as a houseplant on Long Island (but can enjoy a summer vacation June through August).

It's all about the beautiful leaves! 'Florida Beauty' leaves are heavily splashed with yellow or creamy markings so little green actually appears. (However, insufficient light will erase these markings and revert the plant to more green.) The leaves can be dust magnets; use a moist cloth to remove as needed.

Keep 'Florida Beauty' happy; grow in bright to medium light. A word about watering: keep the soil barely moist (never soggy or bone dry). Extra humidity is a plus; use a pebble tray to help remedy dry air locations. Useful in terrariums, dish gardens, table top. Under ideal growing conditions; 'FB' will grow to about 2' tall.

Did you know? 'Florida Beauty' is sensitive to fluoride often found in drinking water; symptoms appear as tip burn on the ends of the leaves. A word to the wise: the ASPCA warns that this plant is poisonous to dogs and cats.
Even with good care, poinsettias can lose their appeal (or leaves!) after the holidays are over. It's time to swap that tired poinsettia for some year 'round houseplant enjoyment. Cleaning the air or beautifying a room, we know that houseplants add so much to indoor spaces - homes, dorms or offices - 365 days a year. So, bring us your old poinsettias (doesn't matter how many or if you bought them elsewhere!) and we'll give you 20% off your purchase of any regularly priced houseplant (one or multiple) that same day. Offer good through January 31st, 2015.
It's the last call for our popular after Christmas sale! All remaining lights; artificial wreaths, garland, trees; linens, ornaments and much more are now 75% off. Enjoy the savings as we say 'good buy' to Christmas 2014! Shop Martin Viette daily from 9am to 6pm.
