Time to apply an anti-desiccant to newly-planted and evergreen shrubs. Doing so will give an extra bit of security from damaging winter weather. Read and follow label directions for frequency and rates.

Buying flowering plants for the Holidays? Make us your last stop on the way home. Periods of cold weather, even in cars, can be damaging to tender plants.

Keep bird feeders and birdbaths filled for visitors.

Clean and inventory garden tools before you store them for their winter nap.

What's happening in the December garden?
Think cool, think cyclamen! Cyclamen, formally known as Cyclamen persicum, provides a long period of indoor bloom during the cooler months. No wonder it's a favorite with our customers and staff during and after the Holidays!

Cyclamens, adored for their incredible flowers and interesting heart-shaped patterned leaves, are must-have plants for the home. Cyclamen flowers, thought to mimic the grace of swans, come in beautiful shades of pinks, reds, and white. Some are spotted with color; others are two-toned with a defined edge of a contrasting color along the margin of the flower petals.

Cyclamen are grown from corms. If you sneak a peek at the soil in the pot, you should see the corm with its many leaves and flowers growing out of it. Cyclamen prefer bright light areas, so look for an eastern or western exposure in the home. Keep them cool - day and night. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 50 degrees F. (Avoid temperatures lower than that; they are not hardy in our climate.) It's best to let the soil dry ever so slightly between waterings. If you can, water from the bottom (similar to the way many people water African violets). The intent is to keep the corm dry to avoid rot. Best way to water: place the cyclamen in a saucer of water for 5-10 minutes. Then drain excess water.
What garden couldn't use some flower power in December and January? Neither rain, or sleet, nor snow will stop Hellebore 'Jacob' from putting on a fabulous winter show with its burgundy stems that showcase beautiful flowers that begin white and mature to deep pink. The first of the hellebores to bloom, 'Jacob' is ideal for holiday decorating or gift-giving. Think: 'In your home for the holidays; in your garden for a lifetime.'

Right plant, right place! Hellebores are happiest when used in landscape beds or borders, woodland gardens, or in planters. For dramatic effect, use them in mass plantings under trees.

Plant hellebores in well-drained, slightly alkaline soils. Clay soils should be amended with organic matter, such as compost or composted manure, prior to planting. Soils that are continually wet or slow to drain should be avoided. Hellebores are better suited to areas that receive morning sun, followed by afternoon shade - never full sun. Plant them in the right location the first time; they don't like to be moved and replanted. Not heavy-feeders, fertilize sparingly late winter or early spring with Plant-tone. And if you garden in deer country, hellebores are deer-resistant.
trees
It's a Christmas Tree Festival of fresh cut trees at Martin Viette! Noble, Fraser and Balsam firs are the most popular cut Christmas tree choices. We have many heights to choose from - tabletop to tall ceiling (12-13'), and everything in between. The ever popular 'Charlie Brown' trees have arrived, too! These precious trees are popular with 'kids' of all ages.

When you buy your cut tree at Martin Viette, we'll make a fresh cut, bale it, and secure it to your car at no extra charge. Bring your tree stand with you; we will gladly fit the stand on the tree after we make a fresh cut.

Short on time and need a hand? Delivery and set-up can be arranged for a fee - ask any of our sales associates for details.
