Norfolk Island pines, sometimes thought of as mini indoor Christmas trees, can often be found stealing the spotlight during the Holiday Season.
Norfolk Island pine (NIP), formally known as Araucaria heterophylla, is an exotic conifer native to Norfolk Island in the southern Pacific Ocean. Hardy in the United States to zones 10-11 (think Miami), NIP is cold sensitive to temperatures lower than 40 F. We grow it as an indoor plant except during the summer months. Daytime temperatures should be in the 60-70 degree F range; somewhat cooler at night.
Easy care tips for Norfolk Island pine: Norfolk Island pine grows best in very bright light areas in the home. You'll know if it's not receiving enough light; the plant's branches will droop. For best results, keep the soil barely moist. (Do not let excess water to collect in the pot's saucer.) If and when you repot, use a potting soil that drains readily. If you want to spoil your NIP, provide ample humidity. Use a humidifier in the room or a pebble tray to boost needed air moisture.
Fertilize when actively growing. Allow the plant to 'rest' (translation: no fertilizer) during the winter months. When you do fertilize, read and follow label directions.

It's a Christmas Tree Festival as the fresh cut trees continue to arrive at Martin Viette! Noble, Fraser and Balsam firs are the most popular cut Christmas tree choices. We have many heights to choose from - tabletop to tall ceiling (12-13'), and everything in between. The ever popular 'Charlie Brown' trees have arrived, too! These precious trees are popular with 'kids' of all ages.
When you buy your cut tree at Martin Viette, we'll make a fresh cut, bale it, and secure it to your car at no extra charge. Bring your tree stand with you; we will gladly fit the stand on the tree after we make a fresh cut.

Santa Claus arrives at Martin Viette this Saturday! Join us every Saturday and Sunday, 1pm - 5pm, now through December 21st for a one-on-one visit with the jolly guy himself! Santa promises to be good to all that have been nice (and maybe a few that have been naughty). So, let him know what you're wishing for this Christmas. Bring the children, bring the camera!
If you can't see Santa in person, you can always write to him and drop it in his special mailbox in the Wreaths and Greens Room at Martin Viette. We'll make sure it gets to the North Pole before Christmas!

Imagine somewhere on the other side of the world, a group of U.S. troops gathered around a fresh, real Christmas tree that was express shipped from the states. Or imagine how a military family of a deployed loved one would feel if they received a real Christmas tree, given by a caring family they have never met. This is the mission of "Trees for Troops", a national charitable campaign run by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, that provides real Christmas trees to members of the armed forces and their families at more than 60 military bases in the U.S. and overseas. Since 2005 more than 139,000 real Christmas trees have been provided to troops and military families.
This year, come to Martin Viette Nurseries now through this Sunday, November 30, to donate a beautiful 6-8 foot Balsam Fir tree to a military family. For only $29.50, your donated tree will be shipped by FedEx to one of over 60 military bases across the country and overseas. A gift card with your Christmas wish or message of gratitude will accompany your tree.
