Ficus lyrata, aka Fiddle Leaf fig, is a beautiful tropical plant native to West Africa. The common name for this Ficus is so fitting - it has large glossy leaves with distinctive and pronounced veins that are fiddle/violin-shaped.
How to grow: Ficus lyrata does best in medium to bright, filtered light areas in the home or office (too little light can cause spindly weak plants that lose their leaves). Watering: avoid overwatering; plants that 'sit' in water are doomed. It's best to water thoroughly, and then allow the soil to dry slightly. Humidity is a plus.
Keep F. lyrata away from direct heat sources - fireplaces, hot air ducts, etc. Indoor heat and dryness can cause leaves to brown along the margins (edges). Indoor temps of 60-75 degrees F are best; avoid temps below 50 degrees F.
Ficus lyrata is perfect as an indoor floor plant. Provide adequate space so you can appreciate the 'architecture' of the plant. Use outside in summer (June, July and August) in planters on decks, patios or around pools, then transition indoors for winter enjoyment.
Did you know? Ficus lyrata is not a 'heavy feeder' like other types of Ficus. Fertilize according to label directions during the growing season.
Repot in spring when needed - jump no more than 2" in pot size. Use potting soil and a pot with adequate drainage. A little grooming goes a long way; its large leaves can be dust magnets. Gently wipe with a moist cloth to clean.

Imagine somewhere on the other side of the world, a group of U.S. troops gathered around a fresh, real Christmas tree that was express shipped from the states. Or imagine how a military family of a deployed loved one would feel if they received a real Christmas tree, given by a caring family they have never met. This is the mission of "Trees for Troops", a national charitable campaign run by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, that provides real Christmas trees to members of the armed forces and their families at more than 60 military bases in the U.S. and overseas. Since 2005 more than 139,000 real Christmas trees have been provided to troops and military families.
This year, come to Martin Viette Nurseries now through November 30, to donate a beautiful 6-8 foot Balsam Fir tree to a military family. For only $29.50, your donated tree will be shipped by FedEx to one of over 60 military bases across the country and overseas. A gift card with your Christmas wish or message of gratitude will accompany your tree.
Can't make it to our store? You can donate a tree by phone or online! Simply call 516 922-5530 (9am to 6pm daily) and donate using a credit card or online at: www.martinviette.com . Donations are tax deductible, plus for every tree donated, Martin Viette donates $5 to the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation.
