gingko leaves
There are still things to do in the garden so don't throw in the trowel just yet!

Keep up with fallen leaves on newly seeded lawns as they can smother young grass plants. Easy-does-it when raking!

Buy amaryllis and paper white bulbs for holiday forcing.

Water all newly-added plants to the landscape.

Compost (or throw away) any remaining plants from the vegetable garden.

Fill and hang bird feeders. (Make sure feeders are clean before you fill with seed.) Once you start to feed the birds, continue this time-honored practice until natural food becomes available next spring.

Love daffodil, tulip, hyacinth and other spring flowering bulbs? To enjoy them in spring, you must plant in fall. Here's how.

What's happening in the November garden?
Love miniature evergreens? Love fairy or trough gardens? Then you'll love Thuja (syn Platycladus) orientalis 'Franky Boy', aka 'Franky Boy' Oriental arborvitae, a slow growing, upright evergreen.

'Frank Boy' delights with beautiful threadlike foliage - bright yellow in spring, summer and fall, followed by reddish bronze winter color. Expect 3-6" of growth a year.

Best grown in full sun (for best color) and moist, well-drained soils; 'Franky Boy' is hardy to Zone 5 (we are considered zone 7).

Another Thuja to love: Thuja plicata 'Whipcord', aka 'Whipcord' Western Red Cedar, is prized for its mophead-like foliage that's green in spring, summer and fall, and then turns bronze-red in winter. Growing conditions for 'Whipcord': full sun and soil that is moist, yet drained is ideal. This slow-grower produces 3-5" of growth per year. Hardy to Zone 5.

Did you know? Dwarf evergreens are perfect for trough and container gardens. Two rules to follow - make sure the container, planter or trough has adequate drainage and can be left outdoors 'year round. A word to the wise: soil should be moist - never waterlogged or bone dry. Have a rock or alpine garden? Thujas are perfect for adding interest, height and texture.

Perfect for alpine, rock, trough or fairy gardens, hardy miniature deciduous and evergreen plants have arrived! Many varieties to choose from including boxwood, Leucothoe, Osmanthus, Cotoneaster, Thuja, Chamaecyparis, juniper, spruce, pine, yew, hemlock and more, can be found in the Wreaths and Greens department at Martin Viette.

All your favorite trees and shrubs, and the right plants for Long Island growing conditions are at Martin Viette; and they're all on sale at 60% off. Quality selections are still available, including dogwood, Hydrangea, Hypericum, holly, butterfly bush and more.

This is an ideal time to add healthy trees and shrubs to your garden or landscape. Remember - "Fall is for Planting'!

Imagine somewhere on the other side of the world, a group of U.S. troops gathered around a fresh, real Christmas tree that was express shipped from the states. Or imagine how a military family of a deployed loved one would feel if they received a real Christmas tree, given by a caring family they have never met. This is the mission of "Trees for Troops", a national charitable campaign run by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, that provides real Christmas trees to members of the armed forces and their families at more than 60 military bases in the U.S. and overseas. Since 2005 more than 139,000 real Christmas trees have been provided to troops and military families.

This year, come to Martin Viette Nurseries November 3 through November 30, to donate a beautiful 6-8 foot Balsam Fir tree to a military family. For only $29.50, your donated tree will be shipped by FedEx to one of over 60 military bases across the country and overseas. A gift card with your Christmas wish or message of gratitude will accompany your tree.

Can't make it to our store? You can donate a tree by phone or online! Simply call 516 922-5530 (9am to 6pm daily) and donate using a credit card or online at: www.martinviette.com . Donations are tax deductible, plus for every tree donated, Martin Viette donates $5 to the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation.
