Aloe barbadensis, aka Aloe vera, is often the 'go to' houseplant for minor cooking burns or sunburns. Hardy in Zones 10-11 (think Miami), Aloe vera spends most of the year indoors, only enjoying the warm months of summer outdoors.
Aloe vera grows best in warm, bright sunny locations (especially bright kitchen windows). Water thoroughly only when needed! And when you do water - allow the soil to dry between waterings. It is a succulent and detests wet or poorly drained potting soils. Less is more!
Repot only when pot bound. Select a pot that has adequate drainage holes and use a potting or cactus soil. A word to the wise: select a pot that is wider than deeper (like a bulb pan). As Aloes sucker, they can easily fill a pot making it top heavy. A wider pot will help. And if you have a tendency to overwater (this may not be the plant for you!), use a clay pot instead of plastic or ceramic if possible.
Did you know? Aloes are NOT heavy feeders. If you fertilize, do so once or twice during the growing season. Read and follow label directions.
