If you've been waiting to fertilize your lawn, time is running out! Nassau County residents have until November 15th to fertilize; Suffolk County residents have until November 1st.

Ready bird feeders; it will soon be time to feed our feathered friends.

There's still time to treat any broadleaved weeds found in the lawn. Eliminate them now; you'll be ahead of the game next spring. Ask us about the proper herbicides (weed killers) to use the next time you come to Martin Viette.

Gentle reminder - harvest the last of any warm season vegetables before the first frost. Green tomatoes can be picked and wrapped in newspaper to continue ripening. Don't be too hasty to harvest cool season crops like cabbage, kale, or Brussels sprouts - a light frost actually helps to improve the taste of these crops. Extra vegetables can be dropped off at Martin Viette Nurseries for donation to the INN's many soup kitchens.

Love daffodil, tulip, hyacinth and other spring flowering bulbs? To enjoy them in spring, you must plant in fall. Here's how.

It's time to think about closing the fountain for winter. See related article below.

What's happening in the October garden.
Don't be fooled by this stretch of warmer-than-normal weather we've been enjoying; frost can happen at any time. The average first frost for this area of Long Island is the 20th of October - but it's just an average. Don't get caught with your plants down - tender plants should be back indoors. All warm season veggies - peppers, eggplants, tomatoes - should be harvested before frost.
They're back! Brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) are finding their way into homes. This reoccurring pest makes itself known every fall; especially during warmer days (like the weather we've been enjoying). Fast forward a bit - warmer winter days can encourage the BMSB to crawl out from beneath shingles and shutters, and out of cracks and crevices around windows and doors.

A little BMSB history according to Penn State University: the BMSB found its way into the United States through Allentown, Pennsylvania in the mid to late 1990's. It didn't take long for this insidious pest to spread throughout Pennsylvania, and additional states both near and far. (The BMSB can be found in California, as well.)

The BMSB is a serious pest of apples, peaches, figs, beans, and other agricultural crops. Farmers are increasingly concerned; the crops they grow and we buy could become even more significantly compromised.

The best way to control them - squash them (you'll quickly find out how they got their name!). If you're a little squeamish, vacuuming is another option. Openings around windows, doors (repair caulking) or in-the-wall air conditioners are perfect entry points for these 6-legged pests. Prevention is your best option. Currently, there are no labeled insecticides to control the BMSB outside the home in New York State. In accordance with NYS law, the name of the insect - the brown marmorated stink bug - must appear on the label of the intended insecticide. If it does not appear, it is illegal to use that remedy. In case you were wondering. . .they do not bite humans!

Goats, sheep, and a cow (and more) - oh my! They're all in the animal farm at old McMartin Viette's. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the kids feeding the animals or selecting pumpkins in our pumpkin patch or having fun with the retired farm tractors and farm scene cutouts. This child-friendly play area is open every day - 9am to 6pm.

Our ever-popular Fall Market, complete with corn stalks, hay bales, pumpkins (including the BIG pumpkins that tip the scales at nearly 100 lbs!), winter squashes (including acorn, Carnival and butternut), and bins of healthy, delicious New York State apples, is open every day from 9am to 6pm through October 26th.

Every weekend we feature fresh-pressed cider in half and full gallons, candied apples, an assortment of baked fruit pies, apple turnovers, fruit crisps, popcorn, chocolate lollipops, and cookies! Plus, enjoy cups of hot or cold cider as you stroll through our fall market.
Ilex verticillata 'Red Sprite', aka 'Red Sprite' winterberry, is a deciduous holly (unlike many hollies, this one loses its leaves with frost) that is native to the eastern region of the United States. 'Red Sprite' is adored for its bright red berries that persist into winter (just imagine those berries against a blanket of snow).

'Red Sprite' is a compact, multi-stemmed shrub that will slowly grow to 4' high and wide. It is hardy in Zones 3-9 (we are considered Zone 7). For best results, grow in sun to part shade, and moist, acidic soil that has been amended with organic matter such as compost or composted manure. (Avoid soils with a neutral or alkaline pH; chlorosis or yellowing of the leaves will result.)

Uses: 'Red Sprite' is perfect for smaller properties - landscape beds and borders; massed plantings; wet, heavy soil areas. It can sucker and form multi-stemmed clumps in wet areas. Plant one and the birds will thank you every time they visit your fall and winter landscape.

Did you know? In order to get berries on female plants, you need to plant a male holly of the same species nearby. Any pruning, if ever needed, should be done in late winter.
All your favorite trees and shrubs, and the right plants for Long Island growing conditions are here; and they're all on sale at 50% off.

Looking for incredible fall color? Japanese maples are the natural choice. Beautyberry, Callicarpa, delights with purple berries on shrubby stems. Ilex verticillata, aka Winterberry, sports beautiful red berries that the birds will thank you for! Need some privacy or screening from your neighbors or an unwanted view? Evergreen and attractive, hollies, arborvitaes or yews will do the trick.

Think ahead; spring 2015 will be colorful when you add rhododendrons and dogwoods to your landscape. And everyone's summer flowering favorites - hydrangeas - can be found (and a whole lot more) on sale, now at Martin Viette.

This is an ideal time to add healthy trees and shrubs to your garden or landscape. Remember - "Fall is for Planting'!
