Gentle reminder - harvest the last of any warm season vegetables before the first frost. Green tomatoes can be picked and wrapped in newspaper to continue ripening. Don't be too hasty to harvest cool season crops like cabbage, kale, or Brussels sprouts - a light frost actually helps to improve the taste of these crops. Extra vegetables can be dropped off at Martin Viette Nurseries for donation to the INN's many soup kitchens.

Need a little help creating beautiful fall planters? It's time to replace tired summer blooming annuals with mums, cabbage and kale. Here's some inspiration to get you started!

BTW - Use hardy mums in your planters. After they finish blooming, add them to your garden. They will repay you with blooms every fall.

Thanks to the cooler weather, newly seeded lawns are growing. That's your cue to mow; set mower blades (make sure they're sharp!) at 3-3 ½". It's too early to store the lawn mower for winter!

Love daffodil, tulip, hyacinth and other spring flowering bulbs? To enjoy them in spring, you must plant in fall. Here's how.

What's happening in the October garden.
It's a long holiday weekend of no school, no work. . .It's time to get outside and have some fun! And if you're looking for fun, you'll find plenty of it at Martin Viette Nurseries during Columbus Day Weekend!

Our fall market and cider booth has fresh-pressed cider in half and full gallons, bins of just-picked New York State apples, candied and caramel apples, chocolate lollipops, hot apple cider, and an assortment of fruit pies, turnovers, crisps, and cookies! Winter squash (perfect for fall cooking!), corn stalks, hay bales, flowering mums, ornamental cabbage and kale - everything you need for a perfect fall.

Saturday, Sunday and Columbus Day from 10am - 5pm, it's paint-your-own sugar pumpkin! Let your little Picasso paint; we'll take care of the clean-up! Children should wear paint-friendly clothes. $5/child includes a sugar pumpkin and paint.

Create your own Halloween mason jar lantern, complete with battery-operated candle, at this special Columbus Day Craft Session. Four lantern styles and two sessions to choose from - 10:30 - 11:30 am or 12:30-1:30 pm on October 13th at Martin Viette Nurseries in East Norwich. Workshop is intended for children ages 5 & older and must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $10.00 per child - ALL supplies are included. Registration and pre-payment is a must! (Regrettably, no refunds.) Call 516-922-5530 to reserve as spots are limited! *Please dress your child in craft-friendly clothes - some supplies may stain.

Goats, and sheep, and ducks - oh my! They're all in the animal farm at old McMartin Viette's. This year, we have a baby cow stealing the show! Be sure to bring your camera to capture the kids selecting pumpkins in our pumpkin patch or having fun with the farm scene cutouts and tractors.

Pelee mums delight with beautiful large, colorful flowers. Unlike outdoor mums, Pelees are ideal for indoor use. To enjoy their beautiful blooms for as long as possible, use in rooms with adequate light (but not direct sunlight), and keep the soil moist (never soggy wet or bone dry). Cool temperatures are better; avoid placing Pelees on or near heat sources (fireplaces, radiators, etc.). Don't confuse Pelee mums with outdoor mums that are perennial and come back year after year; Pelee mums are not winter hardy in our climate. Helpful hint: you can dress up 'ordinary' pots with decorative ceramic planters, baskets, and more. Beautiful Pelee mums - perfect for fall - can be found in the greenhouse at Martin Viette.

Goats, sheep, and a cow (and more) - oh my! They're all in the animal farm at old McMartin Viette's.
