You really can plant it all in the fall - trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and lawns! Long Island is typically blessed with an extended growing season in the fall. Warm days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall make it easy for newly purchased plants to adapt to new planting sites. And even though the nights are cooler, our soils tend to stay warm through much of the fall. That's good news for plant roots that continue to grow until soil temperatures dip down into the high 30's. Another reason to plant it all in the fall - when spring 2015 arrives, you'll enjoy your garden that much sooner. Need to plant? Need some help? Our trained nursery professionals are here to assist you the next time you shop Martin Viette.

Martin Viette Nurseries is offering a special day trip to legendary Longwood Gardens to see their breathtaking displays - 'Longwood at Christmas'. Longwood Gardens, one of the great gardens of the world, is the former estate of Pierre S. du Pont in Kennett Square, PA.

Martin Viette Nurseries is chartering a coach bus to 'Longwood at Christmas' on Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Advanced registration and payment is an absolute must and on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call 516.922.5530 or education@martinviette.com for additional information and registration.
It's time to plant the vegetable garden! All kidding aside, late summer is the ideal time to plant cool season vegetables in the garden. Cool season veggies have two planting seasons - spring and fall. Leafy lettuces, broccoli, chard, carrots, basil, parsley, kale, peas, spinach, broccoli rabe, beans, and cabbage (red and green) enjoy the more favorable growing weather (think cooler air, cooler soils) that fall and spring provide.

Let us twist your gardening arm a little. . .you don't need lots of space to grow cool season veggies. Tuck some lettuce, basil, kale or Swiss chard into sun-loving pots and planters. (These multi-taskers are edible and add lots of interest.) Plant peas next to a fence and let the fence support the vines. It could be time to remove some of your tired annual flowers and add some veggies instead.

Fresh shipments of cool season veggies and herbs have just arrived at Martin Viette. Get growing; it's time to plant the fall vegetable garden!

Sedums, aka stonecrops, are members of the Crassula family. So many sedums to choose from, Sedum spectabile 'Neon', Sedum spectabile 'Brilliant', Sedum x 'Autumn Joy' (pictured) are three noteworthy varieties for the late summer/fall garden.

Sedum spectabile 'Neon' dazzles with show stopping bright pink flower heads (think Bazooka bubblegum pink!) in the late summer/early fall garden. Hardy in zones 3-9 (we are considered zone 7) 'Neon' loves full sun (light shade produces weak, floppy stems with less bloom/color) and well-drained soils. (Once established - drought and heat tolerant.) Clump forming growth habit, 'Neon' will grow to 2' high and wide. Fertilize just once in early spring when new growth begins. Uses: containers, seaside plantings, perennial and garden beds and borders, massed plantings, cut flowers.

Did you know? 'Neon' is a butterfly and bee magnet. This is one plant you may not want to cut back in late fall, its dried flower heads add interest to the winter garden.

Sedum spectabile 'Brilliant', aka 'Brilliant' stonecrop', produces hot pink flowers that mature to rusty red. Hardy in zones 3-9 (we are considered zone 7), grow in full sun and well-drained soils. 'Brilliant', durable and nearly indestructible, will grow to 2' high and wide. Uses: perennial and garden beds and borders, seaside plantings, rock gardens, massed plantings, containers, cut flowers.

Did you know? 'Brilliant' is a butterfly and bee magnet. Leave spent blooms for winter interest; cut back to the ground in late winter/early spring just before new growth begins. Dividing, when necessary, should be done in early spring as the new growth emerges.

Sedum x 'Autumn Joy' is true to its name; 'Autumn Joy' stonecrop is a joy in the autumn garden. Totally dependable, nearly indestructible, 'Autumn Joy' is hardy in zones 3-9 (we are considered zone 7). Thick strong succulent-like stems support flower heads that begin pink and turn red by fall. Like all stonecrops, grow in full sun and well drained soils. 'Autumn Joy' will mature to 2-3' tall; 2' wide. (You can pinch back young growth in late spring to create a fuller, more compact plant.) Uses: perennial and garden beds and borders, seaside plantings, rock gardens, massed plantings, containers, cut flowers.

Did you know that late summer is a great time to plant iris rhizomes in the garden? Planting now allows them to set strong roots going into winter. When next spring arrives, you have established plants that are ready to flower. By the way: a rhizome is a fleshy (but not mushy) horizontal stem that grows above, below or at the soil surface. The rhizome sends out roots that ultimately anchor the plant in the ground. When planting iris, you want to bury only the bottom half of the rhizome; the top half should be exposed. A word to the wise - always plant in bright sunny locations that provide well-drained soil conditions. Beautiful colors of bearded iris rhizomes have just arrived at Martin Viette.
