Mulched beds? Make sure that rain or irrigation is getting through the mulch layer. Your plants could be suffering from lack of water if it's not getting to the roots.

Support floppy heads of Hydrangea paniculata. You'll enjoy their beautiful blooms that much more!

If you've just seeded the lawn, be sure to keep the seeded area moist.

Raid the veggie garden for a healthy snack!

It's time to plant the vegetable garden! All kidding aside, late summer is the ideal time to plant cool season vegetables in the garden. Cool season veggies have two planting seasons - spring and fall. Leafy lettuces, broccoli, chard, carrots, basil, parsley, kale, peas, broccoli rabe, beans, and cabbage (red and green) enjoy the more favorable growing weather (think cooler air, cooler soils) that fall and spring provide.

Let us twist your gardening arm a little. . .you don't need lots of space to grow cool season veggies. Tuck some lettuce, basil, kale or Swiss chard into sun-loving pots and planters. (These multi-taskers are edible and add lots of interest.) Plant peas next to a fence and let the fence support the vines. It could be time to remove some of your tired annual flowers and add some veggies instead.

Fresh shipments of cool season veggies and herbs have just arrived at Martin Viette. Get growing; it's time to plant the fall vegetable garden!

Did you know that late summer is a great time to plant iris rhizomes in the garden? Planting now allows plants to set strong roots going into winter. When next spring arrives, you have established plants that are ready to flower. By the way: a rhizome is a fleshy (but not mushy) horizontal stem that grows above, below or at the soil surface. The rhizome sends out roots that ultimately anchor the plant in the ground. When planting iris, you want to bury only the bottom half of the rhizome; the top half should be exposed. A word to the wise - always plant in bright sunny locations that provide well-drained soil conditions. Beautiful colors of bearded iris rhizomes have just arrived at Martin Viette.
You'll toad-illy love Tricyrtis, commonly called Toad Lily! This late summer/early fall stunner makes a unique statement in landscape or garden beds and borders.

Tricyrtis 'Samurai' is a light to moderate shade-loving perennial that delights with spikes (up to 30" tall) of beautiful flowers beginning in August and continuing into fall.

Hardy to zone 6 (we are considered zone 7), 'Samurai' appreciates organically-enriched moist soil. Pretty flowers and attractive leaves; plant 'Samurai' so it can be enjoyed up close and personal.

Tricyrtis 'Empress' enjoys the same growing conditions as 'Samurai'. Hardy to Zone 5, 'Empress' delights with taller spikes (up to 36") of large white flowers heavily speckled with raspberry-colored spots and yellow throats. With its pretty flowers and pretty leaves, 'Empress' can be enjoyed from a distance in the August through October garden.

Fall is a perfect time to put your landscape dreams in motion. With the professional help of our landscape design/build firm, you can realize the full potential of your property this fall. Ireland Gannon Associates, Martin Viette's sister company, has a well-respected team of landscape designers, construction experts, and horticulturists to provide you with solutions that will be affordable, enjoyable, and aesthetically-pleasing for years to come.

Why tackle landscape projects now? Fall is the ideal time to renovate existing landscapes - beds and borders, driveway and entrance plantings. And if existing plant material needs to be moved to make way for a new planting, Long Island's extended fall weather is ideal for transplanting. Construction of patios, pools and decks need to be planned and some projects may require permits that can be time consuming to obtain. Ireland-Gannon's professional team understands this and will help you with the paperwork and details. The biggest benefit to tackling landscape projects now: when the job is finished this fall, you'll enjoy a beautiful landscape when spring arrives.

Ireland Gannon's office is located at Martin Viette Nurseries, Route 25A, East Norwich (516) 922-4800. Or, we invite you to visit us on the web: www.irelandgannon.com
The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
