Hosta leaves disappearing in the garden? Deer love hosta, too. Use a deer repellent according to label directions.

Needed lawn renovations should be underway. Bare areas in the lawn, if left bare, can produce a bumper crop of weeds. Better to address any seeding or reseeding issues now - late summer through early fall is the best time to start a new or repair an existing lawn on Long Island!

It's only late August; there's still plenty of growing season ahead for your flowering annuals. Encourage more blooms and healthy new growth; liquid feed for a needed shot-in-the-arm!

Ready to lime your lawn? Wait; have a pH test done BEFORE you do. (Your lawn may not need lime, and testing is the only way to tell.) We do free pH tests. Bring in ½ cup of dry soil from each area that needs testing.

Weeds, weeds, weeds! Keep up with any 'freeloaders' (that rob needed moisture and nutrients) in gardens and landscape beds. Not sure what the weed is or how to deal with it? Bring a sample to our diagnostic desk for assistance!

It's their season! Stinging insects - yellow jackets, wasps and hornets - are making their presence known. Treat with a recommended insecticide after dark.

It's time to plant the vegetable garden! All kidding aside, late summer is the ideal time to plant cool season vegetables in the garden. Cool season veggies have two planting seasons - spring and fall. Leafy lettuces, broccoli, chard, carrots, basil, parsley, kale, peas, broccoli rabe, beans, and cabbage (red and green) enjoy the more favorable growing weather (think cooler air, cooler soils) that fall and spring provide.

Let us twist your gardening arm a little. . .you don't need lots of space to grow cool season veggies. Tuck some lettuce, basil, kale or Swiss chard into sun-loving pots and planters. (These multi-taskers are edible and add lots of interest.) Plant peas next to a fence and let the fence support the vines. It could be time to remove some of your tired annual flowers and add some veggies instead.

Did you know that late summer is a great time to plant iris rhizomes in the garden? Planting now allows plants to set strong roots going into winter. When next spring arrives, you have established plants that are ready to flower. By the way: a rhizome is a fleshy (but not mushy) horizontal stem that grows above, below or at the soil surface. The rhizome sends out roots that ultimately anchor the plant in the ground. When planting iris, you want to bury only the bottom half of the rhizome; the top half should be exposed. A word to the wise - always plant in bright sunny locations that provide well-drained soil conditions. Beautiful colors of bearded iris rhizomes have just arrived at Martin Viette.
