Taxus x media 'Hatfieldii', aka Hatfield or common yew, has been popular in Long Island landscapes for decades.
A needle leaved evergreen, Hatfields are broad, columnar plants with a dense upright branching habit. Hardy in zones 4-7 (we are considered zone 7), and 10-14' high; 8-11' wide. (Hatfields can be easily pruned and managed.) Grow in sun to part shade; and slightly acidic soil that is fertile, moist, and well-drained.
Have you heard the saying that yews hate 'wet feet'? Translation - it's essential for the soil to be well-drained, even during the winter months. Standing water or excessive soil moisture is a sure death sentence for yews!
Hatfields are commonly used for hedges, screens or foundation plantings.
Did you know? Deer can be a problem; repellents can be used.
Blackberry Lily, formally known as Belamcanda chinensis, gets its common name from long lasting blackberry-like seeds that appear in pods in late summer or early fall.
Belamcanda is best grown in full sun, and moist, well-drained garden soil. (Heavy soils should be amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting.) This perennial (hardy in zones 5-10) dazzles with orange flowers splashed with yellow and red in the late summer garden. Its long strapping green leaves resemble gladiola foliage. Belamcanda slowly spreads by creeping rhizomes; 2-3' tall; 1-2' wide. Use in landscape beds and borders.
Did you know? Belamcanda is native to Japan, China, India and Central Asia.
