Z is for zinnia - a zippy annual that flowers best in gardens, planters, or window boxes that provide abundant sunshine!
Want to smile? Potted zinnias add instant color (pinks, oranges, yellows, reds) and interest to any sunny space. And if you adore butterflies; plant it and they will come. You'll want to buy extra; zinnias make great cut flowers for the home!
How to grow: keep potting soil moist, but not soggy. It's best to apply water to the soil and not the leaves of zinnias, if possible. Doing so keeps any fungal problems, like powdery mildew, at bay.
Helpful tips: Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants tidy and encourages reblooming. Use Blossom Booster, according to package directions, to keep zinnias in bloom mode.
Spigelia marilandica, commonly known as Indian Pink or Indian Pinkroot, is native to the southeastern United States. Its amazing flowers will 'WOW' you; beautiful red flowers with yellow centers mimic rockets or fireworks when in bloom. Hummingbirds adore this plant for its flowers laden with nectar; so plant it and they will come!
This easy to grow, hardy perennial (hardy in zones 5-9, we are considered zone 7) grows in a variety of soils, but prefers moist, yet well-drained acidic soil that is enriched with organic matter at planting time.
Indian Pink is best planted in partial to full shade. If you fall in love with this plant (and you will!) and only have sunnier spots to plant, additional soil moisture may be needed. Expect plants to grow 12-24" tall, with 12 -18" wide clumps.
Uses: great for native, wildflower, shade or woodland gardens. Mass plantings are striking when in bloom.
Did you know? If you garden in deer country, Spigelia is reported to be deer resistant. Another tip - plant it in the right spot the first time; Spigelia doesn't like to be transplanted. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage potential rebloom in late summer.
