It's too late, and then again too early, to treat for grubs in home lawns. The next time (actually the best time) to treat grubs will be late summer.

Deadhead spent flowers of verbena and geranium to encourage more blooms.

Want bushier plants and more flowers on your hardy mums and Montauk daisies this fall? Pinch back half of the new growth before mid-July. Last pinch and you're done for the season!

Sow another row of beans for harvest later this summer.

You know the saying - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!! Not sure what's bothering your garden? Bring samples to the diagnostic desk at Martin Viette for assistance.

Set your mower blade to 3-3 ½" for the summer. Keep mower blades sharp so they cut, not tear, the grass blades.

Leucanthemum is a fancy, hard-to-pronounce name for a beloved plant! Just say Shasta daisy; a low-maintenance perennial that blooms prolifically in summer.

Shastas grow best in full sun; avoid shady areas that cause them to become leggy and not flower. Soil should be fertile, moist, yet well drained. The addition of organic matter - compost or composted manure - prior to planting can help improve heavy soils.

Our favorite variety, 'Becky', sports large white flowers with yellow centers on strong stems (no staking needed) that will grow to 36". Hardy in Zones 5-9, we are considered Zone 7. Here's another reason to grow this beautiful perennial, 'Becky' is a butterfly magnet in Long Island gardens.

Uses: In beds and borders; perfect for massing - large sunny areas will be a sea of white flowers in summer. Grow for cut flowers to enjoy in informal summer arrangements.

Grooming tips: To encourage additional flowers, deadhead spent summer blooms. Fertilize in early spring when new growth appears.

Did you know? There are many good companion plants for Shasta daisy: Coreopsis, Phlox and Veronica. And if you battle rabbits and deer in your garden, 'Becky' is reported to be resistant!

Pachystachys lutea, aka Lollipop plant or Golden Shrimp plant, leads a double life! Popular as a colorful houseplant during the winter months (it's a tropical plant that will not overwinter outdoors on Long Island), the Lollipop plant is a great addition to summer containers. Especially if you want something a little out-of-the-ordinary. Unusual and attractive, its yellow bracts offer white flowers that stand above evergreen-like foliage. This one is a thriller; expect it to grow 2-3' tall in planters.

For best results, grow in bright but not direct sunlight. Keep soil evenly moist; never allow the soil to dry. Fertilize during the growing season with water soluble fertilizer; always read and follow label directions. If the Lollipop plant becomes leggy, pinch back to create a bushier plant that will produce new blooms.

Did you know? Pachystachys hails from Peru where it is grown as a shrub. If you elect to bring it in as a houseplant during the winter, avoid temperatures below 60 degrees F or leaf drop may result.
