Perfectly pleasing palms that make you think you are in paradise! While we can't have palms year 'round on Long Island, more and more gardens and landscapes are adding palms to their summer 'must have' plant lists. Here's a snap shot of three popular palms and how to grow and enjoy them.
Adonidia palm (also called Christmas palm) is native to the Philippines. Formally known as Veitchia merrillii (some still refer to it by its older name - Adonidia merrillii), slender Adonidia palms are ideal for smaller scale gardens or landscapes. Hardy in Zones 10-12 (think Miami Beach), we are zone 7 on Long Island. Easy to grow, Adonidias love the sun but will tolerate some light shade. Easy-does-it with watering! Water thoroughly, and then allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. A word to the wise: never grow in water-logged soils! Fertilize with Espoma Palm-tone according to package directions. Uses: in pots and planters around pools, decks and patios, or in landscape beds with flowering annuals. Did you know? Adonidia palms are also called Christmas palms because its red berries usually appear around Christmas.
Majesty palm, formally known as Ravenea rivularis, is an outdoor summer plant and an indoor winter plant for Long Island gardeners. Majesty palm is native to Madagascar where it thrives in humid, tropical forests. Florida residents have enjoyed 'Majestys' in their landscapes for many years. How to grow: bright, indirect light inside or outside; keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged! Proper drainage is critical; make sure pot or planter has drainage holes! Fertilize with Espoma Palm-tone according to package directions.
Phoenix roebeleni, aka Pygmy Date Palm or Roebelini, is a perfect choice sun or light shade in the garden or landscape!Roebeleni is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Burma. This slow growing, graceful palm is adored for its fine, feathery foliage. A word of caution - beware of spines found at the base of the fronds. Water thoroughly, and then allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Adequate drainage is a must; be certain to use potting or container mix when planting. Fertilize with Espoma Palm-tone, according to label directions.
Roebelenis are perfect for containers; use as a single specimen or in groups of three by decks, patios or pools. When summer's over, bring your potted palm indoors (provide as much bright light as possible) for continued enjoyment.
