Luscious lantana, a tough and versatile annual flowering plant, dazzles in the summer and fall garden. Like color? Lantana delivers with clusters of florets in shades of whites, pinks, oranges, yellows, and interesting two-tone combinations. And if you like butterflies, lantana is a butterfly magnet - especially for Swallowtails.

How to grow: full sun (the hotter the weather, the happier lantana will be) and well drained potting soils are ideal for lantanas. Too little sun and flower production will diminish. Excessive water/rainfall or pots that are slow-to-drain can cause plants to rot and die. Long-blooming, lantana will flower until a killing frost.

How to use: beds, borders, planters, window boxes, hanging baskets - this one plant does it all in sunny gardens!

Easy to grow and easy to enjoy, daylilies should be on everyone's list of Top Ten perennials. Formally known as Hemerocallis (Greek translation: hemera meaning day, kallos meaning beauty), each flower lasts for just a day. Thankfully, most produce an abundance of blooms that we can enjoy for many weeks in the garden. And with a little planning, you can enjoy a sequence of blooms with your favorite daylilies for many months. Popular varieties, such as 'Stella D'Oro', 'Black-eyed Stella', 'Leebea Orange Crush', 'Frankly Scarlet', and 'Happy Returns' will bloom continually throughout the summer.

It's all about the flowers. . .Flower colors include a wide range of yellows, reds, pinks, purples, and oranges (some are bi-tones, bi-colors, picoteed). Flower shapes: ruffled, double, trumpet, triangular and more. (Good gardeners will deadhead spent blooms regularly. If left on the plant, seedpods will form and rob needed energy from the plant.)

How to grow: plant daylilies in well-drained soils that have been amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting. Full sun is ideal for best flowering. Deep watering is best; provide an inch of water per week for best growth. Overhead watering during sunny days will spot and ruin daylily flowers. It's always best to water the soil - not the leaves or the flowers! Mulch (2") can be used to conserve soil moisture (avoid applying near the crown of the plants).

Care: Divide daylilies when overcrowded (perhaps every 4-5 years) in spring or fall. Fertilize in early spring with Plant-tone.

Grooming: Clean up dead foliage in late fall (a rake is very handy for this chore). Any remaining foliage can be removed in early spring before new growth resumes.

Uses: in pots and planters; in landscape beds and borders; on slopes. Daylilies make a beautiful statement when planted en masse.
It's time to talk about a popular garden saver - the ladybug, which also happens to be the New York State insect! Ladybugs are beneficial in the garden. If you're battling aphids on roses or other garden plants, release a few hungry ladybugs and the aphids will magically disappear! In addition to aphids, ladybugs will also devour soft scales and mites.

Here are a few helpful hints for releasing ladybugs in the garden. It's best to release them in the early evening; this keeps them in the garden (in bright sunshine, they'll fly away!). They'll appreciate some garden moisture, so lightly mist your plants prior to releasing the ladybugs. Open the container and gently scatter some of these beneficial insects from the container under your infested plants. (Store the container in the refrigerator.) Release more each night until the container is empty. Ladybugs will disappear when they have devoured all the 'bad bugs' in the garden. Organic gardeners know the value of ladybugs in the garden, so give them a try. We sell containers of ladybugs at Martin Viette. Praying mantis egg cases have arrived, too!
