If you are looking at brown sticks on your hydrangeas. . . it's time to remove them. This past winter's weather was tough on hydrangeas. Prune back and allow the green growth at the base to flourish. Sadly, dead buds and twigs have eliminated this year's flowers. Fertilize with Plant-tone, according to package directions, to give them a needed shot-in-the-arm.

Be on the lookout for rose slug damage on roses. (This is not the slug found in damp places.) If found, treat with a recommended insecticide. Ask us the next time you shop Martin Viette.

Newly-planted veggies and annuals (and all other recent plantings!) need an adequate supply of water to get growing! If Mother Nature doesn't come through with rain, it's up to us to supply needed H2O!

It's time to give houseplants a much needed outside summer vacation. Shady locations, with some morning sun, are preferable. Never place your houseplants in the hot sun. They, too, will sunburn. Ouch!
Rieger begonia, formally known as Begonia x hiemalis, is a hybrid cross between tuberous and wax begonias. The Rieger begonia is named for Otto Rieger, a German plant breeder.

The new Riegers are excellent flowering plants for the shade - think garden beds, planters or window boxes. They happily offer weeks of blooming interest in attractive colors (pinks, yellows, oranges and reds) to choose from. And believe it or not, they are not prima donnas! Their care is simple: provide morning light (never plant in direct light!) or light shade and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Deadhead spent blooms to keep them neat and encourage additional flowers. Fertilize with water-soluble Blossom Booster fertilizer during the growing season.

Iris sibirica 'White Swirl' (aka Siberian iris) dazzles with beautiful white butterfly-like blooms in May and June. 'White Swirl is a hardy perennial (Zones 3-9) that sports neat clumps of sword-like leaves that last throughout the growing season. Expect 'White Swirl' to grow 32" tall and 24" wide. For best flowering, plant in full sun and well-drained soils.

Uses: perennial borders, cutting (great for cut flowers) or cottage gardens, large containers.

Did you know? Iris sibirica also grows well in boggy soils along ponds and streams. And if you battle wildlife in your garden, 'White Swirl' is reported to be deer and rabbit resistant.

The simple definition of a kitchen garden: growing vegetables, herbs and fruits for one's own consumption. In 2014, more and more people are 'growing their own'. Click to read more. . .
