Organic pest control for every garden; lady bugs and praying mantises to the rescue! Releasing lady bugs is easy as ABC. The trick - release in the evening just as it begins to get dark. Lightly water the area and open the container; they know what to do. Lady bugs will devour aphids and soft scales. Praying mantises emerge from unusual-looking egg cases (pictured) and seek their meals. Place the egg case in an out-of-the-way area amid plants in your garden and wait for it to hatch. They, too, will eat aphids, and other garden pests like earwigs and moths. One drawback - praying mantises have been known to eat the beneficial or 'good bugs' in the garden. Lady bugs and praying mantises have arrived at Martin Viette.

It's time to plant gladiolas in the garden. 'Corms' (bulbs) should be planted in bright, sunny areas that offer well-drained soils. Stagger your planting dates so you get extended color in the garden. Great as cut flowers for the home.

Incredible Edibles - lecture this Saturday at 10am under the big green tent. Remember the INN's soup kitchens; please bring a non-perishable food item to the lecture.

Cut down on weeds and conserve soil moisture! Apply 2" of mulch to landscape beds; avoid mulching the crowns of plants!
