Our brand new website is finally LIVE!

We invite you to check out some new features: monthly calendars, written specifically for Long Island gardeners; localized weather widget; gardening checklists; featured finds - favorite plants for LI gardens; events calendar & more!

Our plant database is a work in progress. Unlike other plant databases that are written for gardeners across the US, ours is written for the local Long Island gardener. Please check it weekly for new additions.

We'd love to hear your thoughts about our new website, and welcome any comments you have to make it better.
They're back; dandelions are appearing - everywhere! Get them before they go to seed (white puffballs). Good advice: do not attempt to hand pull as dandelions have a long taproot. You'll leave part of the weed behind, and it will reappear. Use a recommended weed killer for best control. Need help? We can advise you on what to use and how to use it.

Peonies will benefit from early hooping! If you use wire hoops, start early to encourage the growing points through the openings. The peony foliage easily camouflages the green hoop. Hoop them now! If you snooze, you lose...you'll never get the hoops on maturing peonies. Hoops - in various heights and styles - are readily available at Martin Viette.

Be on the safe side; it's still too early (and too cold!) to plant warm season veggies - tomatoes, eggplants, peppers - in the garden. Purchased plants can be outside during the day and tucked-in a garage or shed for overnight. The safe planting date of May 15 is still two weeks away.

To prune or not to prune? Winter's weather was really tough on landscape plants! Join us this Saturday, May 3rd at 10am for an informative lecture, 'Plant Restoration 101', with Richard Weir, III. Lecture is free under the big green tent. Please bring a canned food item for the INN' food pantries.

Believe it or not, warmer weather is just around the corner. Are your pots ready for summer planting? If not, clean and ready them now.

Cinco de Mayo - it's the perfect time to plant that salsa garden that your taste buds have been yearning for! Tomatoes, onions, peppers, garlic, cilantro and sunshine are the necessary ingredients. Easy to grow in the garden or pots (apartment dwellers with a sunny balcony - you, too, can grow a salsa garden!), for best results provide 6-8 hours of sunshine each day. Soil should be kept moist, never saturated.

There are many, many recipes for salsa - smooth or chunky, mild or ha cha cha! Once you grow the key ingredients, you can experiment and create your own 'signature' salsa. Have the chips handy!
Pineapple Sage, formally known as Salvia splendens, is a fun-to-grow herb for Long Island gardens. Why pineapple sage as a common name? You'll understand once you crush a leaf between your finger tips and enjoy the wonderful aroma of ripe pineapple. Now imagine that tropical infusion of flavor in cool summer drinks or hot teas, or fruit salads and spreads!

Native to Mexico, pineapple sage is grown as an annual herb on Long Island. (Possible alternative - pot it up before fall frost and enjoy it as a sunny houseplant.) PS is ideal for full sun locations and well-drained soils, plant or pot in the garden or containers. But plant wisely; small spring-purchased plants give way to 3-4'+ tall (and nearly as wide), well-branched, shrub-like plants in late summer/early fall.

Uses: Landscape/garden beds and borders; herb and vegetable gardens; large containers.

Did you know? Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to its late season spires of to-die-for red flowers. And if you garden in deer country, pineapple sage is reported to be deer tolerant.

Mukdenia, formally known as Mukdenia rossii 'Karasuba', is a beautiful, spring-blooming perennial despite its unusual name! Native to China, Korea & Manchuria, 'Karasuba' delights with white, star shaped flowers that rise above the leaves in April and May.
