Hostas overcrowded last year? It's time to divide and replant.

Continue to plant cool season veggies in the garden or containers. Lettuces, cabbages, Brussels sprouts and peas enjoy cooler spring weather.

Even though we have passed the last frost date of April 20th. . .remember it's an average date- frosts can still happen. Avoid planting warm season annuals and veggies until mid-May.

Continue to feed birds until there are reliable sources of berries and insects available.

Tomorrow is Arbor Day in New York, so plant a tree to commemorate this special holiday. Future generations will thank you!
As the horticultural saying goes. . .when forsythia is in full bloom, it's time to apply a pre-emergent crabgrass control to the lawn. So, if forsythia is screaming with yellow flowers in your neck of the woods, apply a pre-emergent control now. (Be prepared to make a second application later this spring.)

It's so much easier to control crabgrass with a pre-emergent material. If you're seeding any bare spots in the lawn, make sure that you use a product that can be applied in conjunction with seeding. Not sure? Ask us.

A word to the wise: Once crabgrass germinates and takes over, post-emergent materials can be used but they are not as effective and can discolor certain grass types. Plus, crabgrass sticks out like a sore thumb - its color, texture, and habit is completely contrary to our typical home lawn grasses.

If you're using a pre-emergent crabgrass control, always read the entire label and follow all directions to a tee. Here's some good advice regarding pesticide labels - read the label first, then apply.
Armeria maritima 'Armada Rose', aka 'Armada Rose' Sea Thrift, is a hardy perennial (hardy in zones 3-8, we are considered zone 7), for spring gardens and planters.

'Aramada Rose' dazzles with attractive green grass-like leaves with bright magenta lollipop-like flowers that bloom heavily in April and May. Although small in size - 6-8" high, 10-12" wide, 'Armada Rose' is great for tight spots in the garden.

Plant in well-drained soils; heavy soils should be amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting. Sea thrifts detest wet soils; good drainage is essential!

Uses: edgings, borders, containers, seaside locations.

Did you know? Dead head spent flowers to encourage additional blooms. Less is more with sea thrifts - avoid excess moisture and fertilizers.
It's time to get your green thumb growing! Join us for one or all of these free informative Saturday lectures. All are given at 10am. Please call ahead to reserve a seat under the big green tent - 516.922.5530

Many of you have called or visited Martin Viette during the past few weeks asking about a mystery yellow-flowering plant blooming along many roadsides and areas of the North Shore. A major word of caution - Ranunculus ficaria is NO friend in the garden!!! A member of the buttercup family, this invasive weed will quickly take over as massive green carpets during spring. Plants disappear during the summer months, leaving pernicious tubers and bulbets underground. Do NOT hand pull or dig out this weed! The careful use of a non-selective herbicide can be applied according to label directions. Ranunculus ficaria resembles the marsh marigold, Caltha palustris, a non-invasive plant that grows in wetland areas. Be certain of the identification before you treat.
Join us this weekend, April 26 and 27, as we celebrate Arbor Day at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay! The Festival is a collaborative effort between Planting Fields Foundation and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. For more information click here.
We are open 8am to 6pm, every day through April 30. Our store hours change beginning May 1st: Sunday to Thursday, 8am to 6pm; Friday and Saturday 8am to 8pm, through June 30.
