The average last frost date is April 20th! (Hard to believe when we have night temperatures that have been at or below freezing.) Remember that's just an average - frost can still happen. Good gardeners will keep an eye on the weather, and garden accordingly with tender plants.
|
||||
Spray fruit trees with a multi-purpose fruit/orchard spray; read and follow label directions to a tee.
Plant strawberries in sunny areas (aim for at least 6 hours of full sun each day) in the garden. No room in your garden? Plant them in a strawberry jar.
Winter damage is appearing in the best of landscapes. Before you do any pruning, make sure that the growth you are removing is dead. Not sure? Lightly scratch the bark to see if it is green or brown underneath. If brown, keep pruning until you get to live green tissue.
Bare areas in the lawn? Buy and use a high quality grass seed to fill-in. If you don't, weeds will do it for you.

Polemonium, aka Jacob's Ladder, is a popular group of perennials for the spring garden. Two new favorites have just arrived in bud and bloom - Polemonium 'Heaven Scent' and Polemonium 'Touch of Class'. Polemonium 'Heaven Scent' delights with fragrant sprays of bluish-purple flowers that sit above fern-like foliage. This clump grower is hardy in zones 3A-7 (we are considered zone 7).

Be on the lookout for hairy bittercress in spring lawns! Its seeds germinate in cool moist soils (think spring). And since it reproduces by seed, your best bet is to tackle this weed when young and NOT let it go to flower. Hand pull in landscape beds and borders or use an herbicide to control in home lawns - spot treat where needed. |
