We are still 10 days away from the last average frost date of April 20th. This is an average, not a hard fast date (translation - frosts can still occur after April 20th). Better to be safe, than sorry!
Be on the lookout for weeds sprouting in landscape beds and borders. Not sure what the weed is or how to control it? Bring it to us; we'll identify it and give you choices for dealing with it!
Before you dig-in to gardening this spring. . .Check your tools, and clean and sharpen them if needed. Our Garden Center carries a complete line of comfortable gardening tools for every need.
It's been tough times for landscape plants - bitterly-cold winter, snow storms, and ice - to name a few. Give your plants a needed shot-in-the-arm; fertilize all, including roses, now. Keep it simple - use Holly-tone for acid-loving plants; Rose-tone for roses, and Plant-tone for everything else.

Osteospermum, commonly called African daisy, is a perfect annual for spring plantings! Prized for its incredible daisy-like flowers, African daisy is a natural for sunny pots, planters, window boxes, and beds and borders. Helpful hints: keep soil barely moist; never allow it to dry out. Remove spent flowers to encourage more blossoms. Fertilize with Blossom Booster according to package directions.
Looking to add a little zest to your Easter or Passover celebration? Calla lilies, formally known as Zantedeschia aethiopica, add color and interest with their unusual showy flowers!
Potted callas can be enjoyed indoors now. Easy to care for, callas are happiest in bright light areas of the home. Be sure to keep the soil moist (not saturated!) and remove the flowers as they begin to fade. Another plus, in addition to the beautiful flowers, the remaining foliage adds interest, as well.
Callas can be more than just indoor plants. This multi-purpose plant can also be grown for cut flowers (bridal bouquets often feature calla blooms) or as bedding plants for the garden. In warmer climates (zones 8-10), callas can be grown year 'round in the garden, albeit with fingers crossed and mulch as winter protection in zone 8. For us in Zone 7, callas are enjoyed outside during the summer months. Try your hand at growing calla lilies; bulbs are available in The Barn at Martin Viette.

The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. We ask for your help throughout the winter by donating non-perishable food items. A collection bin is located outside the main doors at Martin Viette's. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
