Happy Spring; it's time to tackle some needed garden chores this weekend. (Aren't you just itchin' to get your hands dirty!?) Here are some possibilities to keep you busy:

As rose growth resumes after a long winter's rest, it's time to prune! Always use clean, sharp pruners to remove any dead or diseased canes. Healthy canes can be trimmed back, as well. And if you grow low maintenance carpet or knock-out rose types, they should be pruned back heavily now. Short and sweet: if your roses need a good pruning, NOW is the time to do it!

If you haven't already, remove all protective winter mulch from landscape beds and borders. Plants need to 'get growing'!

Rake the lawn to remove all remaining winter debris - branches, leaves and other debris. Assess the situation, and seed if bare spots or weak areas are discovered.

It's time to start seeds of warm season vegetables inside - think tomatoes, peppers, eggplants! Many varieties - organic and heirloom, too - can be found at Martin Viette.
Ready to dive into your outside garden chores? Before you do, think about those muscles that have enjoyed a long winter respite. Digging, weeding, planting - you'll be using muscles that have been 'dormant' for several or more months. Ease yourself back into things - a little daily stretching of the arms and legs goes a long way before you head outside. Try not to tackle everything at once; make your 'to-do list' and prioritize. Even large chores can be broken down into manageable pieces. Think moderation; the chores will still be there waiting for you.
Do you apply lime to your lawn and landscape each and every spring? Surprisingly, this may be one chore that you can skip this year! Don't guess that your soils need lime; have a pH test done to determine the acidity or alkalinity of it. Learn more.
Nemesia, sometimes mistakenly called amnesia (!), is a wonderful flowering annual that resembles a miniature snapdragon. Popular in spring, Nemesia easily transitions to warm season planters for continued enjoyment through fall. Another reason to plant Nemesia - some varieties are fragrant.

Nemesia is great for hanging baskets, window boxes and other planters. Plant in full sun or partial shade. A word to the wise: avoid overwatering Nemesia or planting where soils are heavy and wet. A well-draining soil is a must.

Easy care: Feed, with a liquid or granular fertilizer, according to label directions. Nemesia is considered a low maintenance plant; deadheading spent blooms is not necessary.
The last of the late winter/early spring seminars is this Saturday, April 5th! Offered at 11am, and again at 1pm; please call Martin Viette - 516.922.5530 - to register for a free seat.
