It's official, at least according to the calendar, Spring has arrived! And the first signs of spring have arrived in Long Island landscapes, too. Be on the lookout for early crocus that have just begun to bloom.

As soon as the ground is workable, plant pea seeds in the garden or a planter. Full sun is a must!

Prune brambles - raspberries and blackberries - now. Grapes, too, if you haven't already.

Keep the pruners handy; cut back Buddleia (butterfly bush) now for bushier plants this summer.

Use Bulb-tone on newly-emerging leaves of spring-flowering bulbs.
Do you apply lime to your lawn and landscape each and every spring? Surprisingly, this may be one chore that you can skip this year! Don't guess that your soils need lime; have a pH test done to determine the acidity or alkalinity of it. Learn more.
Brazel Berries®, a new collection of patio-sized, self-fruiting blueberries, hail from the great state of Oregon. And lucky for Long Island gardeners, they can successfully be grown in our own backyards.

With yummy names like 'Peach Sorbet' and 'Jelly Bean', these popular, hardy varieties (zones 5-10; we are considered zone 7 on Long Island) are perfect for smaller gardens and container plantings.

'Peach Sorbet' delights with multiple seasons of interest -white flowers in spring that give way to sweet blueberries in mid-summer, followed by colorful leaves in fall. This desirable plant forms a compact mound 1 ½-2 feet tall.

'Jelly Bean', like 'Peach Sorbet', has the same seasons of interest. Just 1-2 feet high and a foot wide, this little charmer is a big fruit producer in the garden or containers.

As with all blueberries, well-drained, acidic soil is a must (that means no lime!). Always plant in full sun and provide adequate watering (never allow them to go 'bone-dry' or 'sit' in water). Fertilize just once in early spring with Holly-tone according to package directions.

Pruning Brazel Berries: these blueberries produce new canes each spring but set fruits on the previous year's canes. After fruiting, prune the canes that have just fruited and leave the new canes - they will fruit the following season. It's wise to prune annually to promote good plant growth and berry production.
