The countdown continues. . .Only 8 days 'til Spring (at least according to the calendar!).

As the snow continues to peel away, spring flowering bulbs are finally making their presence known! That's your cue to fertilize with Bulb-tone; read and follow package directions.

Longer days; it's time to fertilize houseplants once again. If you haven't started, do so now.

Rollercoaster temperatures continue to be tough on landscape plants (and us). The time to assess winter's damage is coming.

Seed starting time is now. Join us this Saturday - 11am or 1pm - for a free informative lecture on seed starting.
Pots of lucky clovers - just in time for Saint Patrick's Day! Oxalis (aka clover) is a versatile plant for indoor, and then outdoor use during the summer months. Oxalis is prized for its interesting, colorful foliage. That's not to say that the flowers of oxalis aren't worthy of attention, they are! But when most gardeners think 'oxalis', they really think about the leaves. And let's not confuse this group of desirable oxalis with the weedy oxalis that invades home lawns.

Easy to care for, annual oxalis does best in medium light locations - think eastern or western exposure indoors. Outdoors, plant oxalis in part shade for best results. Keep the soil barely moist; be careful not to overwater. Another plus, there's no deadheading of spent blooms, this is a 'self-cleaning' plant - less work for you and more time to enjoy your plants.

During the winter months, oxalis can be enjoyed indoors in decorative pots in the home, office or dorm. After all danger of frost has past (after May 15), oxalis transitions easily into outdoor pots, window boxes and planters. Use it for accents of color mixed in with other foliage and flowering plants.

If you live and garden in 'deer country', oxalis is deer resistant. One more good reason to include this plant in your 2014 garden.

April 5 What's Ahead with Shady Summer Annuals Join us as Dr. Nora Catlin of Cornell University Cooperative Extension dishes on exciting annuals 'made for the shade' for Long Island gardeners. Beautiful flowers that make you say 'WOW', Japanese camellia can be grown on Long Island in Zone 7 (most of LI is Zone 7a). Helpful hints: plant in a sheltered, protected location that affords some partial shade from intense sun. Japanese camellias are well suited for planting around foundations, borders, fences and walls. You can grow them in planters, provided that the planters can be left out of doors all year round (4 season planters that will not crack and crumble with winter's weather) and there's adequate room for soil. They are slow growing plants so plan and plant with this in mind.

Another WOW - enjoy 20% off all camellias - in beautiful bud and bloom - now at Martin Viette.

Fresh vegetable, herb and flowers seeds - including heirloom and organic varieties - have arrived at Martin Viette. All the requisite supplies for seed starting - soil, trays, labels and more - are here, too. New to starting seeds? Click here for some helpful tips or ask any of our sales associates to share their successful seed starting recipes with you.
Super moss is just that - SUPER! So many uses, you'll wonder how you lived without it. Lorraine, Martin Viette's silk floral designer, uses Super Moss with silk orchid and faux succulent designs. Why? Lorraine says that the color of the spanish moss or sheet moss stays green (it's preserved and color-enhanced); it never browns to detract from the design.

Look for expanded selections of Super Moss products, including several styles of bird houses, in the greenhouse at Martin Viette's.
The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. We ask for your help throughout the winter by donating non-perishable food items. A collection bin is located outside the main doors at Martin Viette's. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
