The countdown continues. . .Only 22 days 'til Spring.

Time to start cool season vegetables and herbs indoors! Spinach, lettuce, leeks, parsley, chives, dill, cilantro and others can all be started now for transplanting in the garden in April. Shop our expanded selection of seeds (including organics) from our favorite seed houses.

It's been a long winter for houseplants; now is the time to resume feeding. Always read and follow package directions for fertilizer rates of application and frequency.

Continue to feed the birds! A fresh water source is helpful, too.
With spring just around the corner (according to the calendar!) and more snow in the forecast. . . it's time to add some beautiful color to indoor spaces. Primula polyanthus, referred to as Common Primrose, delights with colorful, showy flowers in late winter through early spring.

Indoor care: Bright light, but not direct light is preferred along with cool temperatures - as low as 50 - 60 degrees F at night. Soil should be moist, but not waterlogged. (Soils that are too wet will cause the plant to rot and die.) Additional humidity is helpful.

To keep or not to keep. . .Some treat Primula polyanthus as an annual and toss the plant after blooming. Others will plant this hardy spring-blooming perennial in their garden to enjoy for years to come. If you elect to treat it as a perennial, read on. Choose a location that offers a rich, humus soil that is slight acidic and well-drained. (Heavy soils should be amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting.) The ideal garden location - full sun in spring, followed by partial shade during the summer months (think groundcover, and plant under favorite landscape trees like dogwood). The goal is to keep the roots cool during summer's heat.

Helpful tips: Remove spent blooms (stems, too) to keep plants healthy and productive. Divide and replant overcrowded plants after spring bloom.

Great for early spring planters and window boxes; use in combination with tulips, daffodils and other spring flowering beauties.
