The countdown continues. . . Only 43 days 'til Spring.

As tempting as it might be, do NOT attempt to remove ice from plants - especially evergreens. More harm, than good, will likely occur!

Keep bird feeders stocked. Use a birdbath heater (plug-in de-icer) to keep water available for your feathered friends.

Did you plant spring-flowering bulbs last fall? If so, think of all this snow cover as great insulation for these soon-to-be (relatively speaking) flowering beauties.
Cymbidiums, prized for their beautiful flowers, are making their annual appearance at Martin Viette! Our cymbidiums dazzle with three to five spikes per pot (some have nine or more!), with 8-15 flowers per spike - that adds up to many flowers providing weeks and weeks of enjoyment.

How to grow: Cymbidiums can take full sun in winter, but not in summer. (East or west windows are best during the higher light intensity of summer.) Well-grown plants generally have yellow-green leaves. In fact, dark green leaves usually indicate that more light is needed, especially for flowering.

Water Cymbidiums when the top ½" of potting mix dries. Don't let the plants get completely dry. Helpful hint: they benefit greatly from high humidity; use a humidifier.

When Cymbidiums are finished blooming, cut back the flower spikes, but leave the foliage. New growth will sprout and continue to grow until it flowers next year. After flowering has finished, use a 30-10-10 fertilizer to encourage new leaf growth. Use ¼ tsp. per gallon of water (every time you water) from February - July. Keep the plant in a bright, sunny location until you can move it outdoors in late May.

Reblooming: These large, wonderful plants benefit greatly from a shady summer vacation outdoors. Water them often during that time. As fall approaches, water the plants less and fertilize with Super Blossom Booster when you water. They need cool temperatures in the fall, so leave them outdoors until nighttime temperatures reach 360 F. Then bring indoors to a very sunny location.

Cymbidiums need to be repotted once every 3-4 years. The best time to repot Cymbidiums is after flowering, usually between March and May. A good indicator for repotting: look for cracks in the pot (overcrowded roots will cause the pot to split or crack). Clay pots are preferred. Orchid potting mix, with added fir bark for coarseness, works well for Cymbidiums.
