It's time to fertilize trees and shrubs. Use Holly-tone for all acid-loving plants - rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries, camellias, dogwoods. Use Plant-tone for all other trees and shrubs in the landscape. Please read and follow label directions for amount to use.
Last mow! It's time to cut the lawn for the final time in 2013 (are you cheering?)! Drop the mower blade for this final cut to 2". Winter is a good time to do any repair work on mowers. While you're at it - sharpen the blades so you are ready when spring 2014 arrives.

Imagine somewhere on the other side of the world, a group of U.S. troops gathered around a fresh, real Christmas tree that was express shipped from the states. Or imagine how a military family of a deployed loved one would feel if they received a real Christmas tree, given by a caring family they have never met. This is the mission of "Trees for Troops", a national charitable campaign run by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, that provides real Christmas trees to members of the armed forces and their families at more than 60 military bases in the U.S. and overseas. Since 2005 more than 103,000 real Christmas trees have been provided to troops and military families.
This year, come to Martin Viette Nurseries now through December 1, to donate a beautiful 6-8 foot Balsam Fir tree to a military family. For only $29.50, your donated tree will be shipped by FedEx to one of over 60 military bases across the country and overseas. A gift card with your Christmas wish or message of gratitude will accompany your tree.
Can't make it to our store? You can donate a tree by phone! Simply call 516 922-5530 (9am to 6pm daily) and donate a tree using a credit card. Donations are tax deductible, plus for every tree donated, Martin Viette donates $5 to the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation.

Santa Claus arrives at Martin Viette this Saturday! Join us every Saturday and Sunday, 1pm - 5pm, now through December 22nd for a one-on-one visit with the jolly guy himself! Santa promises to be good to all that have been nice (and maybe a few that have been naughty). So, let him know what you're wishing for this Christmas. Bring the children, bring the camera!
If you can't see Santa in person, you can always write to him on his special stationary, and then pin it to his bulletin board in the Wreaths and Greens Room at Martin Viette. We'll make sure it gets to the North Pole before Christmas!

Is it the intoxicating fragrance of paperwhites that people fall in love with, or the pure white daffodil-like flowers? Paperwhites, formally known as Narcissus tazetta, are flowering bulbs with greatest seasonal interest during the winter months. Ever so easy to care for, paper whites make a fragrant statement in pre-planted pots - perfect for gift giving for that special someone or for you!
Paperwhites will last longer where indoor temperatures are cooler; hot rooms will cause them to expire quickly. Once they begin to bloom, bright or direct light is no longer needed. Always keep the soil moist, but never saturated.

These trees are lifelike in every sense of the word - fuller with many tips, and natural-like color. The only things missing - the fragrance (our Fraser Fir candles will remedy that) and messy dropped needles on the rug or floor. The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. We ask for your help throughout the winter by donating non-perishable food items. A collection bin is located outside the main doors at Martin Viette's. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.

Daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, snow drops, alliums and more - there's still time to plant bulbs on Long Island. Remember - you have to plant now to enjoy their amazing blooms in spring. Haven't gotten your bulbs yet? All spring-flowering bulbs are now 75% off!
Bulb planting is easy and fun. Make it a family activity and get the kids involved; they'll be amazed at the results next spring! Here's how: choose a location that's bright and sunny (6 plus hours a day of sunshine). Well-drained soils are an absolute must; soils that are frequently wet or soggy, especially during the winter months, should be avoided! Not sure how deep to plant your bulbs? Figure 2 ½ to 3 times the diameter of the bulbs in depth. Example - if your tulip bulb is 2" in diameter, plant it 5-6" deep. Add Bulb-tone or bone meal to the soil. Cover the bulbs and water in. Helpful hint: squirrels like tulip bulbs so use a repellent like Repels-All when planting.
Clever gardeners know how to stretch the blooming season by sequencing. Plant early, mid and late season bloomers so you can enjoy months of spring color. Need help in stretching the bloom time? Just ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates.
