If you've recently reseeded/renovated the lawn, be certain to remove any leaves that can smother the grass. Easy does it with the rake so you do not dislodge new grass seedlings.

Sad to see the outdoor gardening season coming to an end? There are still a few things you can do while they're fresh in your memory. If you took pictures of your garden or planters, you know what worked well, and what didn't. Organize them over the winter, with notes, so you can repeat the success or eliminate the failure! No photos; make some notes now. You'll be thankful you did when spring rolls around. (BTW - only 133 days until spring 2014!)

Time to clean-up frosted annuals in pots or the garden. Diseased or insect-ridden plants should not be added to the compost pile; better to bag and dispose of curbside.
Streptocarpus, commonly called cape violet or cape primrose, is native to Africa. This attractive houseplant dazzles with beautiful tube-like flowers spring through fall.

If you can grow an African Violet, you can grow Streptocarpus as their care is the same (they are both members of the Gesneriad family). Light: bright but never direct sunlight. (Very long, strappy leaves and few flowers can be the result of insufficient light.) Water: when the soil is dry (stick your finger an inch into the potting soil, water thoroughly if dry). Avoid overwatering at all costs; it's a sure death sentence for the plant. Helpful hint - make sure that the pot always has a drainage hole to allow excess moisture to escape. Fertilize: with a complete houseplant fertilizer, according to label directions, from March through October. Temperature: 55-70 degrees F is ideal.

To pot or not to repot? Streptocarpus should be repotted only when pot bound. Even then, some will put off repotting (a bit) to encourage more flowering.

Good gardeners will remove spent flowers from Streptocarpus (do the same with African violets).
Please join us Saturday evening, November 23, when Martin Viette Nurseries opens its doors for the 13th Annual Holiday Reception to Benefit the INN's - Interfaith Nutrition Network - soup kitchens and homeless shelters.

The evening's festivities include Chinese and silent auctions with many, many wonderful items provided by local merchants, sponsors and special vendors. A light repast will be served.

We hope you'll join us for this very special evening. In the true spirit of giving - all of the proceeds from this event go directly to the INN for their soup kitchens and homeless shelters across Long Island. Advance tickets are available; please call 516.922.5530 for tickets and details.
Our beautiful, lifelike Christmas trees are now on display and available at Martin Viette Nurseries. (BTW- only 55 days 'til Christmas!) These trees are lifelike in every sense of the word - fuller with many tips, and natural-like color. The only things missing - the fragrance (our Fraser Fir candles will remedy that) and messy dropped needles on the rug or floor. We have many styles and sizes to choose from including the popular table-tops, and 6 ½ to 12' models. Truly, these are not your grandmother's artificial trees.

Dread stringing lights on the tree each year? The solution: our pre-lit trees (pre-lit means that if one light goes out; the rest stay lit) have Ever-Bright lights. Choose from white light, or multi-colored light, models.

The limited edition 2013 INN Charity Ornament is a beautiful European blown-glass wrapped Christmas present adorned with a poinsettia. 'Wrapped up in Holiday Cheer', this thoughtful ornament comes nestled in its own gift box. Perfect for teachers, friends, business associates and you. All profits from the sale of this ornament are donated to the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). Available now at Martin Viette.
Q: Do I need to dig up my elephant ear plant now that a frost has nipped it back? If so, what do I do with it for the winter?

A: If you want to try your luck in 2014, you will need to dig up and store the elephant ear rhizome. Carefully lift the rhizome, remove any remaining soil with a hose, and then let it dry in a sunny location for a few hours. Store the rhizome in a flat, crate or open box filled with vermiculite or peat moss in a frost-free location (it cannot freeze!) - such as a cool garage or basement. Avoid plastic bags or containers that can trap moisture. Check periodically for any signs of rot and if found, discard the rhizome. Another option would be to keep it in its original pot and store in a cool location, as a dormant plant during the winter. To do this, cut back the stems to within a few inches of the rhizome, leave it in its pot and store in a cool (not freezing) garage or basement. Gardeners (novice and experienced) report mixed results with overwintering elephant ears. If you're not successful, there will always be potted plants and rhizomes to buy in 2014.
Daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, snow drops, alliums and more - it's bulb planting time on Long Island. Remember - you have to plant these bulbs in the fall to enjoy their amazing blooms in spring. Haven't gotten your bulbs yet? You'll be glad you waited - all spring-flowering bulbs are now 25% off!

Bulb planting is easy and fun. Make it a family activity and get the kids involved; they'll be amazed at the results next spring! Here's how: choose a location that's bright and sunny (6 plus hours a day of sunshine). Well-drained soils are an absolute must; soils that are frequently wet or soggy, especially during the winter months, should be avoided! Not sure how deep to plant your bulbs? Figure 2 ½ to 3 times the diameter of the bulbs in depth. Example - if your tulip bulb is 2" in diameter, plant it 5-6" deep. Add Bulb-tone or bone meal to the soil. Cover the bulbs and water in. Helpful hint: squirrels like tulip bulbs so use a repellent like Repels-All when planting.

Clever gardeners know how to stretch the blooming season by sequencing. Plant early, mid and late season bloomers so you can enjoy months of spring color. Need help in stretching the bloom time? Just ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates.

You can bring the beauty of spring flowering bulbs into your home when you buy extra bulbs for forcing. Not sure how to coax daffodils, tulips and others to bloom for you indoors? We'll share the tricks of the trade with you when you shop at Martin Viette.

All your favorite trees and shrubs, and the right plants for Long Island growing conditions are here; and they're all on sale at 50% off through November 17th.

Looking for incredible fall color? Japanese maples are the natural choice. Need some privacy or screening from your neighbors or an unwanted view? Cryptomerias or hollies will do the trick. Boxwoods are perfect for low hedges around a courtyard, patio or pool; or an evergreen groundcover from juniper is perfect for sunny areas in the landscape. Think ahead; 2014 will be colorful when you add summer flowering favorites - butterfly bushes, hydrangeas (including the climbing hydrangea) and crape myrtles - to your landscape. All this, and a whole lot more is on sale, now at Martin Viette.
