Daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, snow drops, alliums and more - it's bulb planting time on Long Island. Remember - you have to plant these bulbs in the fall to enjoy their amazing blooms in spring. Haven't gotten your bulbs yet? If you snooze, you'll lose!
Bulb planting is easy and fun. Make it a family activity and get the kids involved; they'll be amazed at the results next spring! Here's how: choose a location that's bright and sunny (6 plus hours a day of sunshine). Well-drained soils are an absolute must; soils that are frequently wet or soggy, especially during the winter months, should be avoided! Not sure how deep to plant your bulbs? Figure 2 ½ to 3 times the diameter of the bulbs in depth. Example - if your tulip bulb is 2" in diameter, plant it 5-6" deep. Add Bulb-tone or bone meal to the soil. Cover the bulbs and water in. Helpful hint: squirrels like tulip bulbs so use a repellent like Repels-All when planting.
Clever gardeners know how to stretch the blooming season by sequencing. Plant early, mid and late season bloomers so you can enjoy months of spring color. Need help in stretching the bloom time? Just ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates.
You can bring the beauty of spring flowering bulbs into your home when you buy extra bulbs for forcing. Not sure how to coax daffodils, tulips and others to bloom for you indoors? We'll share the tricks of the trade with you when you shop at Martin Viette.

Why talk about spring-flowering bulbs now? To enjoy in the spring, you must plant in the fall. And while tulips and daffodils are known by nearly everyone, there are some unusual bulbs that are worth a first, or second, look. So for the next few weeks, we'll share some of the lesser known bulbs with you.
Grape hyacinth, formally known as Muscari species, produces delicate grape-shaped flowers (that are loved by friendly bees) in shades of blue or white. For best results, plant your bulbs in sunny locations that have fertile, well-drained soils. Avoid soils that are often wet or slow-to-drain.
Uses: Muscari work well when interplanted with other bulbs like tulips and daffodils or in rock gardens, large planters, or as edging for walkways or borders.
Do you enjoy potted flowering bulbs indoors? If so, Muscari is easy to force for indoor enjoyment. Here's how!
Plant your Muscari bulbs potting soil or container mix in clean pots with drainage holes. The bulbs should be an inch or two below the soil surface. The more bulbs per pot, the greater the impact! Water thoroughly after planting. To coax (aka force) bulbs to bloom, you must provide 3-4 months of constant cool temperatures (40 degrees F) in a dark environment to promote rooting. After this needed chill, move pots to an area that provides indirect light and 60 degree F temperatures; water pots thoroughly. When the green shoots are 4-6" tall, move pots to a warmer, sunny area (68-70 degrees F); color should soon develop in their buds. Cooler temperatures - in the low 60's - will prolong the life of the flowers. It should take 3-4 weeks from the end of their chill period to bloom time.

Fall is a perfect time to put your landscape dreams in motion. With the professional help of a landscape design/build firm, you can realize the full potential of your property this fall. Ireland Gannon Associates, Martin Viette's sister company, has a well-respected team of landscape construction experts, horticulturists and designers to provide you with solutions that will be affordable, enjoyable, and aesthetically-pleasing for years to come.
Why tackle landscape projects now? Fall is the ideal time to renovate existing landscapes - beds and borders, driveway and entrance plantings. And if existing plant material needs to be moved to make way for a new planting, Long Island's extended fall weather is ideal for transplanting. Construction of patios, pools and decks need to be planned and some projects may require permits that can be time consuming to obtain. Ireland-Gannon's professional team understands this and will help you with the paperwork and details. The biggest benefit to tackling landscape projects now: when the job is finished this fall, you'll enjoy a beautiful landscape when spring arrives.
Ireland Gannon's office is located at Martin Viette Nurseries, Route 25A, East Norwich (516) 922-4800. Or, we invite you to visit us on the web: www.irelandgannon.com
