After a delayed start, yellow jackets are beginning to make their presence known. Here's the buzz on dealing with these 6 -legged stingers! If you know where the nest is, you can spray with a labeled insecticide in and around the opening of the nest after dark (we have products that you can use). If you are allergic to bees, calling an exterminator would be a safer way to eliminate them. Light frosts may reduce their activity; a killing frost will do just that - kill them.

Continue to plant spring-flowering bulbs in the garden. Want cut flowers for the home? Buy and plant extra tulips and daffodils now for indoor enjoyment next spring.

Cool season grasses continue to grow; you need to continue to mow. It's way too early to put the mower away until next spring.

There's still time to treat any broadleaved weeds found in the lawn. Eliminate them now; you'll be ahead of the game next spring. Ask us about the proper herbicides (weed killers) to use the next time you come to Martin Viette.

Seeing carpets of yellowing needles on the ground? It happens every fall! Some years seem more pronounced than others, that's when people take notice. A few thoughts on this: plants that are drought-stressed may react more noticeably (recall the dry periods we've had this summer, and the dry stretch we're in now). No need for alarm, it's Mother Nature's way of shedding older growth that the plant doesn't need and cannot support. In natural landscaped areas, use these needles as mulch. This natural phenomenon is not limited to pines; you will see it on rhododendrons, azaleas and other evergreens at this time of the year.
Ornamental cabbage and kale are perfect companion plants - perfect with each other, as well as other fall plants like mums and pansies! Some refer to them as flowering cabbage and kale; the truth is they are popular because of their incredible foliage. Flowers can appear the second season, but by then, the weather has turned warm, the foliage peters out and the plants are discarded to make way for spring flowering plants.

To eat or not to eat. . .although ornamental cabbage and kale share the same name as their edible cousins (Brassica oleracea), you'll probably not want to indulge. The ornamental types can be eaten, but they tend to be very bitter and lose color when cooked. Some will use the leaves of ornamental kale as a plate garnish instead of sprigs of parsley.

Not a fair weathered friend, you can expect ornamental cabbage and kale to be longtime performers in the garden. Their desirable colors intensify after a few light frosts - whites, pinks and reds become more pronounced with the onset of colder weather. And when it gets really cold, they're tolerant of temperatures to 5 degrees F. It's not unusual to see their beautiful foliage poking through a light blanket of snow during the winter months.

How to use them: As edgings - along walkways, driveways and borders; in beds, planters, pots and window boxes; or en masse in large planting areas.

Here's a fun plant to bounce by you; Ficus elastica decora aka rubber tree or rubber plant! Prized as an indoor plant for generations, this waxy-leaved tropical can make quite a statement in the home, office or dorm.

How to grow: an eastern or western exposure is ideal as rubber plants love bright light areas in the home. Water thoroughly, and then allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Not sure how to check the soil for moisture? Stick a finger several inches into the soil - if moist, do not water.

Thinking ahead - rubber plants are tropical and can be outdoors for the summer. Before autumn nights get too cool, bring the plant inside (generally by late September). If summering outside on a patio or deck, place in bright but NOT direct sunlight.

Helpful hints: Leaves can be dust magnets so an occasional cleaning of the leaves with a damp, soft cloth or light shower will do the trick.

Snowdrops, formally known as Galanthus species, produce delicate white blossoms that pop up through the snow. This low grower should be planted along walkways, rock gardens, and at the edge of woodland areas. A favorite with gardeners as Galanthus bulbs will naturalize over time. Best planted in light, dappled shade in fertile, moist, yet well-drained soil. An early bloomer not favored by deer!
All your favorite trees and shrubs, and the right plants for Long Island growing conditions are here; and they're all on sale at 50% off.

Looking for incredible fall color? Japanese maples are the natural choice. Need some privacy or screening from your neighbors or an unwanted view? Arborvitaes, Cryptomerias, or hollies will do the trick. How about some winter interest in the garden or landscape? Red twig dogwoods will delight with beautiful red canes amid a carpet of snow. Boxwoods and yews are perfect for low hedges around a courtyard, patio or pool; or an evergreen groundcover from juniper is perfect for sunny areas in the landscape. Think ahead; spring 2014 will be colorful when you add rhododendrons or azaleas to your landscape. The birds will thank you when you plant viburnums - beautiful spring flowers give way to edible fruit in summer. And everyone's summer flowering favorites - butterfly bushes, hydrangeas (including the climbing hydrangea) and crape myrtles - can be found (and a whole lot more) on sale, now at Martin Viette.

This is an ideal time to add healthy trees and shrubs to your garden or landscape. Remember - "Fall is for Planting'!

You really can plant it all in the fall! Many of us are 'conditioned' to think that all planting chores must be done in the spring. True, spring gives us the big push to start the vegetable garden; plant flowering annuals in pots, planters and landscape beds; and add some roses and other interests to the landscape. Once summer hits, hot weather can stifle even the most avid gardener (think back to the scorching July weather we experienced!). And then fall arrives and the urge to 'dig in' happens once again.

If you've been waiting to add new trees, shrubs, perennials, or bulbs to your gardens, the wait is over! Why? Long Island is typically blessed with an extended growing season in the fall. Warm days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall make it easy for newly purchased and planted trees, shrubs, and perennials to adapt to new planting sites. And even though the nights are cooler, our soils tend to stay warm through much of the fall. That's good news for plant roots that continue to grow until soil temperatures dip down into the high 30's. Plus, you're a step ahead of spring 2014 when all those other spring chores will need to be tackled.

Daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, snow drops, alliums and more - it's bulb planting time on Long Island. Remember - you have to plant these bulbs in the fall to enjoy their amazing blooms in spring. Haven't gotten your bulbs yet? If you snooze, you'll lose!

Bulb planting is easy and fun. Make it a family activity and get the kids involved; they'll be amazed at the results next spring! Here's how: choose a location that's bright and sunny (6 plus hours a day of sunshine). Well-drained soils are an absolute must; soils that are frequently wet or soggy, especially during the winter months, should be avoided! Not sure how deep to plant your bulbs? Figure 2 ½ to 3 times the diameter of the bulbs in depth. Example - if your tulip bulb is 2" in diameter, plant it 5-6" deep. Add Bulb-tone or bone meal to the soil. Cover the bulbs and water in. Helpful hint: squirrels like tulip bulbs so use a repellent like Repels-All when planting.

Clever gardeners know how to stretch the blooming season by sequencing. Plant early, mid and late season bloomers so you can enjoy months of spring color. Need help in stretching the bloom time? Just ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates!

You can bring the beauty of spring flowering bulbs into your home when you buy extra bulbs for forcing. Not sure how to coax daffodils, tulips and others to bloom for you indoors? We'll share the tricks of the trade with you when you shop at Martin Viette.
