Ornamental cabbage and kale are long lasting plants in the fall and early winter garden! It's all about the leaves; fabulous leaf shapes and colors add interest and texture to pots, planters, beds and borders.

Remember to mow newly-seeded lawns regularly (generally weekly). Keep the blades sharp so you cut, not tear, the blades. Set the blade height to 3". Remember - as long as grass (new and established lawns) continues to grow, you have to mow!

Need to fertilize your lawn? All lawns must be fertilized (if you're going to) by November 1 in Suffolk County or by November 15 in Nassau County, with a non-phosphorus (P) fertilizer.
It's a long holiday weekend of no school, no work. . . It's time to get outside and have some fun! And if you're looking for fun, you'll find plenty of it at Martin Viette Nurseries during Columbus Day Weekend!

Our fall market and cider booth has fresh-pressed cider in half and full gallons, bins of just-picked New York State apples, candied and caramel apples, chocolate lollipops, hot apple cider, and an assortment of fruit pies, turnovers, crisps, and cookies! Winter squash (perfect for fall cooking!), corn stalks, hay bales, flowering mums, ornamental cabbage and kale - everything you need for a perfect fall.

Saturday, Sunday and Columbus Day from 10am - 5pm, it's paint-your-own sugar pumpkin! Let your little Picasso paint; we'll take care of the clean-up! Children should wear paint-friendly clothes. $5/child includes a sugar pumpkin and paint.

Goats, and sheep, and ducks - oh my! They're all in the animal farm at old McMartin Viette's. This year, we have a baby cow stealing the show! Be sure to bring your camera to capture the kids selecting pumpkins in our pumpkin patch or having fun with the farm scene cutouts and tractors.

Come celebrate Columbus Day Weekend with us - daily from 9am to 6pm.
Incredible for the fall garden and perfect to plant now, perennial ornamental grasses add so much interest and texture to sunny landscape beds, borders and containers throughout the year.

There are so many reasons to plant ornamental grasses on Long Island. Here are a few: tolerant of a wide range of soils; provide sound in the garden; winter habitat for birds; four seasons of interest; taller varieties useful for screening. Short, medium or tall, many varieties exist for different uses. Be sure to ask our knowledgeable staff about the best choices for your landscape.

It's important to understand the growth habit of grasses before you buy and plant. Ornamental grasses are considered either clump-forming or rhizome-forming (creeping). Rhizome-forming grasses can be aggressive (some invasive) so plant with care.

Simple care and low-maintenance make ornamental grasses a winning choice for the landscape. Fertilize in late winter or early spring as new growth emerges with Plant-tone or a slow-release Osmocote; that's it. Grasses are not heavy feeders.

Prune back grasses in late winter or early spring to within 4-6" of the ground. Make this yearly task easier - tie and bundle the grass before you cut it to make clean-up a breeze.

Divide grasses in late winter or early spring, or late summer or early fall. Containerized plants can be planted as long as the ground is workable, not frozen.

Once established, ornamental grasses are drought-tolerant (that doesn't mean NO water!). And if you garden in deer country, they are considered to be deer-resistant.

Do you think of Hawaii when you see anthuriums? Many people do; that's why they are often referred to as the 'Heart of Hawaii' flower.

Anthuriums can be found growing in tropical areas around the world, with many being native to tropical rain forests. In recent years, plant collectors and breeders have gained an interest in this unusual group of plants. This translates to new varieties for us to grow and enjoy. And let's not forget about the tremendous interest the florist industry has in anthuriums as cut flowers.

Anthuriums grow best in bright, filtered light; avoid direct southern exposures that cause the leaves to burn. Too little light will reduce the plant's ability to flower. Another plus for the growing them indoors: they are tolerant of a wide temperature range, but do best between 68-90 degrees F. They are considered a durable plant, and with proper care, one that blooms nearly all year long.

A few words about watering and potting soils: Anthuriums demand a potting soil that is rich in organic matter and drains readily. At all costs, avoid potting soils that are heavy or waterlog easily. When you water, make sure that the water drains out of the pot (drainage holes are a must!) If you use a saucer to catch excess water, be certain to dump that water within 30 minutes of watering. Soil should be slightly moist, never dry. If you neglect their water needs, you'll know it - the tips of the leaves will dry and turn brown. Too much water causes the roots and leaves to rot.

A few trade secrets: Anthuriums like to be pot bound so repot only when absolutely necessary. An adequate root system is important to anchor the plant as it continues to grow; otherwise too few roots cause it becomes 'top heavy' and floppy. Another plus - anthuriums are relatively problem-free. Fertilize with Jack's Blossom Booster to encourage them to bloom freely. A little primping goes a long way - remove any dead leaves when they appear. Last secret - Keep leaves away from frosty winter windowpanes; they aren't tolerant of cold temperatures.

You really can plant it all in the fall! Many of us are 'conditioned' to think that all planting chores must be done in the spring. True, spring gives us the big push to start the vegetable garden; plant flowering annuals in pots, planters and landscape beds; and add some roses and other interests to the landscape. Once summer hits, hot weather can stifle even the most avid gardener (think back to the scorching July weather we experienced!). And then fall arrives and the urge to 'dig in' happens once again.

If you've been waiting to add new trees, shrubs, perennials, or bulbs to your gardens, the wait is over! Why? Long Island is typically blessed with an extended growing season in the fall. Warm days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall make it easy for newly purchased and planted trees, shrubs, and perennials to adapt to new planting sites. And even though the nights are cooler, our soils tend to stay warm through much of the fall. That's good news for plant roots that continue to grow until soil temperatures dip down into the high 30's. Plus, you're a step ahead of spring 2014 when all those other spring chores will need to be tackled.

Daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, snow drops, alliums and more - it's bulb planting time on Long Island. Remember - you have to plant these bulbs in the fall to enjoy their amazing blooms in spring. Haven't gotten your bulbs yet? If you snooze, you'll lose!

Bulb planting is easy and fun. Make it a family activity and get the kids involved; they'll be amazed at the results next spring! Here's how: choose a location that's bright and sunny (6 plus hours a day of sunshine). Well-drained soils are an absolute must; soils that are frequently wet or soggy, especially during the winter months, should be avoided! Not sure how deep to plant your bulbs? Figure 2 ½ to 3 times the diameter of the bulbs in depth. Example - if your tulip bulb is 2" in diameter, plant it 5-6" deep. Add Bulb-tone or bone meal to the soil. Cover the bulbs and water in. Helpful hint: squirrels like tulip bulbs so use a repellent like Repels-All when planting.

Clever gardeners know how to stretch the blooming season by sequencing. Plant early, mid and late season bloomers so you can enjoy months of spring color. Need help in stretching the bloom time? Just ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates!

You can bring the beauty of spring flowering bulbs into your home when you buy extra bulbs for forcing. Not sure how to coax daffodils, tulips and others to bloom for you indoors? We'll share the tricks of the trade with you when you shop at Martin Viette.
