October is an ideal time to treat any broad-leaved weeds (think dandelion, plantain, clover, chickweed) in the lawn. Read and follow all label directions on the herbicide (aka weed killer) package.

Dry, dry, dry; that means you need to water, water, water all plants. Pay extra attention to all newly-planted trees, shrubs, perennials.

Don't be fooled by the warmer outside temperatures, all 'summering' houseplants need to be back indoors!
They're back! Brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) are finding their way into homes. This reoccurring pest makes itself known every fall; especially during warmer days (like the weather we've been enjoying). Warmer winter days can encourage the BMSB to crawl out from beneath shingles and shutters, and out of cracks and crevices around windows and doors.

A little BMSB history according to Penn State University: the BMSB found its way into the United States through Allentown, Pennsylvania in the mid to late 1990's. It didn't take long for this insidious pest to spread throughout Pennsylvania, and additional states both near and far. (The BMSB can be found in California.)

The BMSB is a serious pest of apples, peaches, figs, beans, and other agricultural crops. Farmers are increasingly concerned; the crops they grow and we buy could become even more significantly compromised.

The best way to control them - squash them (you'll quickly find out how they got their name!). If you're a little squeamish, vacuuming is another option. Openings around windows, doors (repair caulking) or in-the-wall air conditioners are perfect entry points for these 6-legged pests. Prevention is your best option. Currently, there are no labeled insecticides to control the BMSB inside or outside the home in New York State. In accordance with NYS law, the name of the insect - the brown marmorated stink bug - must appear on the label of the intended insecticide. If it does not appear, it is illegal to use that remedy. In case you were wondering. . .they do not bite humans!

Stay tuned; as more information about the BMSB becomes available, we will share it through this e-newsletter, Facebook page, and www.martinviette.com.
Ornamental peppers make great additions to fall beds, borders and planters! Colorful fruits in purples, bright yellows, orangey-reds can add a lot of pep to tired gardens. Treated as an annual, enjoy ornamental peppers until a frost, and then discard.

People will ask if these peppers are edible. The answer is yes, but they do NOT taste like the peppers we are accustomed to eating and enjoying. In addition, they were not grown as an edible crop (just as ornamentals) and may have been sprayed at the grower.

A fun selection of ornamental peppers has just arrived. Not sure how to mix and match or add them to your fall planters? We're here to help! Ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates for assistance the next time you shop at Martin Viette.

You really can plant it all in the fall! Many of us are 'conditioned' to think that all planting chores must be done in the spring. True, spring gives us the big push to start the vegetable garden; plant flowering annuals in pots, planters and landscape beds; and add some roses and other interests to the landscape. Once summer hits, hot weather can stifle even the most avid gardener (think back to the scorching July weather we experienced!). And then fall arrives and the urge to 'dig in' happens once again.

If you've been waiting to add new trees, shrubs, perennials, or bulbs to your gardens, the wait is over! Why? Long Island is typically blessed with an extended growing season in the fall. Warm days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall make it easy for newly purchased and planted trees, shrubs, and perennials to adapt to new planting sites. And even though the nights are cooler, our soils tend to stay warm through much of the fall. That's good news for plant roots that continue to grow until soil temperatures dip down into the high 30's. Plus, you're a step ahead of spring 2014 when all those other spring chores will need to be tackled.

Fall is a perfect time to put your landscape dreams in motion. With the professional help of a landscape design/build firm, you can realize the full potential of your property this fall. Ireland Gannon Associates, Martin Viette's sister company, has a well-respected team of landscape construction experts, horticulturists and designers to provide you with solutions that will be affordable, enjoyable, and aesthetically-pleasing for years to come.

Why tackle landscape projects now? Fall is the ideal time to renovate existing landscapes - beds and borders, driveway and entrance plantings. And if existing plant material needs to be moved to make way for a new planting, Long Island's extended fall weather is ideal for transplanting. Construction of patios, pools and decks need to be planned and some projects may require permits that can be time consuming to obtain. Ireland-Gannon's professional team understands this and will help you with the paperwork and details. The biggest benefit to tackling landscape projects now: when the job is finished this fall, you'll enjoy a beautiful landscape when spring arrives.

Ireland Gannon's office is located at Martin Viette Nurseries, Route 25A, East Norwich (516) 922-4800. Or, we invite you to visit us on the web: www.irelandgannon.com
