Continue to harvest veggies as they ripen. Surplus harvest? You can donate extra veggies, herbs and fruits to the INN's soup kitchens. Drop off your donation to Martin Viette Nurseries during open hours (daily 9am to 6pm); we'll deliver it to the INN. Thank you for making a difference!

Prolong the enjoyment of your summer flowering annuals; give them a needed shot-in-the-arm with Blossom Booster fertilizer.

Notice the days are getting shorter and the nights a bit cooler? That's your cue to bring in any houseplants that have enjoyed an outdoor summer vacation! Inspect plants thoroughly before bringing in; avoid hitchhiking insects that are looking for warmer winter quarters. Got a pest problem? We can help with a solution!

Is brown the new green for home lawns? No doubt about it, it's been a tough summer for turfgrass - excessive heat, drought, and pesky insect, disease and weed problems. It's the ideal time to green things up once again by reseeding!

Black-eyed Susans, formally referred to as Rudbeckia hirta 'Goldsturm', are perfect additions to Long Island gardens. Showy, cheery, yellow daisy-like flowers are sure to bring a smile wherever they are planted!

BES's look great when tucked into sunny pots or landscape beds & borders. Soil should be moist, yet well drained. (Avoid dry soils for best results.)

Fun reasons to grow BES: the flowers are hummingbird, bee and butterfly magnets. Plant extra and use as cut flowers for informal bouquets. Feed the birds - leave the seed heads if you want to attract them to the garden. Another reason to save the seed heads, Rudbeckia often reseeds itself in the garden.

Panicum virgatum 'Ruby Ribbons' is a prized perennial ornamental grass for sunny landscape beds and borders. Hybridized at the University of Connecticut, PRR's has all the merits of native switch grass with some added perks suitable for today's gardens.

Panicum 'Ruby Ribbons', a clump-growing grass (4-5' tall; 2-3' wide), is hardy in Zones 4-9 (we are considered zone 7). As the seasons change, so do the colors of RR's foliage. Early season green-grey foliage gives way to red wine overtones from summer through fall. And its airy flowers give a cloud-like feeling to the late summer and fall garden. Good gardeners will allow persistent seed heads to remain for winter interest.

'Ruby Ribbons' will grow in moist areas - along ponds, streams and water gardens. For best results, soil should be moist, yet well-drained. This low-maintenance grass will do best when pruned in late winter or early spring to within 4-6" of the ground.

Uses: in naturalized areas, mass plantings, as screening, or as an accent plant.

And if you garden in deer country, Panicum 'Ruby Ribbons' is reported to be deer resistant.

You really can plant it all in the fall! Many of us are 'conditioned' to think that all planting chores must be done in the spring. True, spring gives us the big push to start the vegetable garden; plant flowering annuals in pots, planters and landscape beds; and add some roses and other interests to the landscape. Once summer hits, hot weather can stifle even the most avid gardener (think back to the scorching July weather we experienced!). And then fall arrives and the urge to 'dig in' happens once again.

If you've been waiting to add some new trees, shrubs, perennials, or bulbs to your gardens, the wait is over! Why? Long Island is typically blessed with an extended growing season in the fall. Warm days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall make it easy for newly purchased and planted trees, shrubs, and perennials to adapt to new planting sites. And even though the nights are cooler, our soils tend to stay warm through much of the fall. That's good news for plant roots that continue to grow until soil temperatures dip down into the high 30's. Plus, you're a step ahead of spring 2014 when all those other spring chores will need to be tackled.

It's early September and that means only one thing when we talk about lawn insects - grubs! These grubs could be the larvae of several types of beetles including oriental, Asiatic or Japanese beetles.

It's important to understand the life cycle of these insidious lawn pests. This diagram, courtesy of Cornell University, shows the life cycle of the Japanese beetle, an insect easily recognized by many gardeners.

At this time of the year, young grubs should be in the upper root zone area of the lawn, actively feeding on the roots of your lawn. If found, the sooner you treat the better! The younger the grub, the more effective the treatment will be. Read and follow the label directions to a tee (we have remedies to combat these pests!). If left untreated, grubs will continue to feed for the next 4-6 weeks (or longer if we have a warm, extended fall) before they dig deeper into the soil to spend the winter months. They'll begin to surface again next spring, and resume feeding. The only difference, older grubs are much more difficult to control than those found in your lawn now. To the point - treat now when grubs are young and most vulnerable to insecticides!
It's time to plant the vegetable garden! All kidding aside, late summer is the ideal time to plant cool season vegetables in the garden. Cool season veggies have two planting seasons - spring and fall. Lettuce, broccoli, chard, beets, carrots, cilantro, kale, arugula, spinach, cauliflower, beets, broccoli rabe, kohlrabi, broccoli, beans, and cabbage enjoy the more favorable growing weather (think cooler air, cooler soils) that fall and spring provides. Forget the summer months for these veggies; they 'bolt' when the temperatures soar!

Let us twist your gardening arm a little. . .you don't need lots of space to grow cool season veggies. Tuck some lettuce, basil, spinach or Swiss chard into sun-loving pots and planters. (These multi-taskers are edible and add lots of interest.) Plant peas next to a fence and let the fence support the vines. It could be time to remove some of your tired annual flowers and add some veggies instead.

Fresh shipments of cool season veggies and herbs have arrived at Martin Viette. Get growing; it's time to plant the fall vegetable garden!
