Seed or sod? If you decide to seed, now is the time to do it. Worth repeating: buy and use quality grass seed that fits the site. Sunny areas need sunny mixtures, and so on.

Have a pH test done BEFORE you add lime to the lawn. We do free pH tests. Bring in ½ cup of dry soil from each area that needs testing.

Continue to plant cool season veggies in the garden.

Favorite plants in this year's garden? Take pictures and make notes as a reminder of what to plant (or what not to plant!) in 2014.
Martin Viette will be closed on Monday, September 2nd for Labor Day. We will reopen at 9am on Tuesday, September 3rd. September hours: daily 9am to 6pm.
Anemones, hardy perennials, are prized for their beautiful flowers that grace the late summer and fall garden. Strong stems hold pink or white flowers high above the attractive whorls of leaves. Depending on the variety, anemones begin to bloom in August and continue until frost. Anemone 'Honorine Jobert' has been planted and enjoyed by gardeners since the Civil War - a true testament to the hardiness and continued interest in this very popular variety of anemone!

How to grow: Plant in rich, moist yet well-drained soils. Good gardeners will prepare the soil prior to planting - add compost or composted manure. Sun or part sun (afternoon shade can be helpful during the heat of the summer) is preferable.

Uses: Fall blooming anemones are perfect for beds, borders or containers. Use as accents in the background of a border as some varieties can grow to 36"+. Another plus - they can be used as cut flowers for floral arrangements for the home.

Thankfully, fall blooming anemones are virtually trouble-free, making them a sure bet for years of enjoyment. And if you garden in deer country, anemones are reported to be deer resistant.

Fall is the perfect time to plant anemones and other perennials in your garden. Many varieties - in bud and bloom - can be found in the perennials yard at Martin Viette.

Did you know that late summer is a great time to plant iris rhizomes in the garden? Planting now allows plants to set strong roots going into winter. When next spring arrives, you have established plants that are ready to flower. By the way: a rhizome is a fleshy (but not mushy) horizontal stem that grows above, below or at the soil surface. The rhizome sends out roots that ultimately anchor the plant in the ground. When planting iris, you want to bury only the bottom half of the rhizome; the top half should be exposed. A word to the wise - always plant in bright sunny locations that provide well-drained soil conditions. Beautiful colors of bearded iris rhizomes have just arrived at Martin Viette.
It's time to plant the vegetable garden! All kidding aside, late summer is the ideal time to plant cool season vegetables in the garden. Cool season veggies have two planting seasons - spring and fall. Lettuce, broccoli, kale, arugula, spinach, cauliflower, beets, broccoli rabe, brussel sprouts, broccoli, beans, and cabbage enjoy the more favorable growing weather (think cooler air, cooler soils) that fall and spring provides. Forget the summer months for these veggies; they 'bolt' when the temperatures soar!

Let us twist your gardening arm a little. . .you don't need lots of space to grow cool season veggies. Tuck some lettuce, basil, spinach or Swiss chard into sun-loving pots and planters. (These multi-taskers are edible and add lots of interest.) Plant peas next to a fence and let the fence support the vines. It could be time to remove some of your tired annual flowers and add some veggies instead.

Fresh shipments of cool season veggies and herbs have just arrived at Martin Viette. Get growing; it's time to plant the fall vegetable garden!
