It's been dry; remember to water regularly and responsibly. Pay special attention to any newly-planted trees, shrubs or perennials in your garden or landscape.

Needed lawn renovations should be underway. Bare areas in the lawn, if left bare, can produce a bumper crop of weeds. Better to address any seeding or reseeding issues now - late summer through early fall is the best time to start a new or repair an existing lawn on Long Island!

It's only late August; there's still plenty of growing season ahead for your flowering annuals. Encourage more blooms and healthy new growth; liquid feed for a needed shot-in-the-arm!

Remember to harvest, harvest, harvest regularly any veggies or herbs from the garden.
Platycodon 'Sentimental Blue', commonly called Balloon flower (great common name - the flower really looks like a balloon), is a summer blooming perennial that's hardy in zones 3-8 (we are considered zone 7). This dwarf balloon flower offers that beautiful shade of blue that so many gardeners look to add to their gardens.

Platycodon 'Sentimental Blue' blooms best in full sun, although light afternoon shade from intense summer sun is welcomed. Choose the right location the first time; Platycodon doesn't like to be transplanted. Expect PSB to grow to 1' in height, 1-1 ½' in spread. Soil should be moist, yet well drained. You can deadhead spent blooms. Fertilize in early spring with Plant-tone according to label directions. No pest or disease problems to speak of, PSB is low maintenance.

Good companion plants: coreopsis, black-eyed Susan's and Shasta daisies.
Did you know that late summer is a great time to plant iris rhizomes in the garden? Planting now allows plants to set strong roots going into winter. When next spring arrives, you have established plants that are ready to flower. By the way: a rhizome is a fleshy (but not mushy) horizontal stem that grows above, below or at the soil surface. The rhizome sends out roots that ultimately anchor the plant in the ground. When planting iris, you want to bury only the bottom half of the rhizome; the top half should be exposed. A word to the wise - always plant in bright sunny locations that provide well-drained soil conditions. Beautiful colors of bearded iris rhizomes have just arrived at Martin Viette.
It's time to plant the vegetable garden! All kidding aside, late summer is the ideal time to plant cool season vegetables in the garden. Cool season veggies have two planting seasons - spring and fall. Lettuce, broccoli, kale, arugula, spinach, cauliflower, beets, broccoli rabe, brussel sprouts, broccoli, beans, and cabbage enjoy the more favorable growing weather (think cooler air, cooler soils) that fall and spring provides. Forget the summer months for these veggies; they 'bolt' when the temperatures soar!

Let us twist your gardening arm a little. . .you don't need lots of space to grow cool season veggies. Tuck some lettuce, basil, spinach or Swiss chard into sun-loving pots and planters. (These multi-taskers are edible and add lots of interest.) Plant peas next to a fence and let the fence support the vines. It could be time to remove some of your tired annual flowers and add some veggies instead.

Fresh shipments of cool season veggies and herbs have just arrived at Martin Viette. Get growing; it's time to plant the fall vegetable garden!
