Helenium is a native North American perennial that's commonly called Sneezeweed. Why sneezeweed? Lore has it that the dried leaves of Helenium were used in snuff to induce sneezing to rid the body of evil spirits.
Helenium 'Mardi Gras', hardy in zones 4-8 (we are considered Zone 7), is adored for its colorful tie-dyed flowers in shades of yellow lavishly splashed with orangey-red. Like butterflies? Plant 'Mardi Gras' and wait for the butterfly parade to begin!
How to grow: Heleniums like lots of sun and moist, yet well-drained soils. (A word to the wise - they are intolerant of dry soil locations.) Allow some room as 'Mardi Gras' can grow 36-40" tall and 24" wide. They can also be used in large containers or planters for summer flowering.
Like cut flowers for the home? Helenium, with its strong rigid stems, is ideal for informal, seasonal bouquets and arrangements.
And if you garden in deer country, Helenium is reported to be resistant deer and rabbits.

Did you know that late summer is a great time to plant iris rhizomes in the garden? Planting now allows plants to set strong roots going into winter. When next spring arrives, you have established plants that are ready to flower. By the way: a rhizome is a fleshy (but not mushy) horizontal stem that grows above, below or at the soil surface. The rhizome sends out roots that ultimately anchor the plant in the ground. When planting iris, you want to bury only the bottom half of the rhizome; the top half should be exposed. A word to the wise - always plant in bright sunny locations that provide well-drained soil conditions. Beautiful colors of bearded iris rhizomes have just arrived at Martin Viette.
