Be on the lookout for grubs in home lawns. (Yes, they're back!) Young grubs will actively feed on turfgrass roots, causing considerable damage in a short period of time. The younger the grub, the more effective the insecticide treatment will be. Always read and follow label directions when using any pesticide. Ask us about grub control the next time you shop Martin Viette.

Make sure your vegetable garden is evenly and well watered. Keep it weeded so water and nutrients go directly to the vegetable plants.

Hydrangeas can be so beautiful at this time of year flaunting their vintage-colored blooms. Now is the time to cut and dry hydrangeas for indoor decorating. Here's how: water hydrangeas deeply for 2-3 days, then on the morning of the third day, cut the flower with enough stem to hang to dry. Cut back to just above a healthy set of leaf buds on strong stems to ensure good flowers for next year.

Leucanthemum. . .a fancy, hard-to-pronounce name for a beloved plant! Just say Shasta daisy; a low-maintenance perennial that blooms prolifically in summer. "Becky', the most popular Shasta variety, dazzles with large white flowers with yellow centers that are butterfly magnets in the garden.

Shastas grow best in full sun; avoid shady areas that can cause them to become leggy and not flower. Soil should be fertile, moist, yet well drained. The addition of organic matter - compost or composted manure - prior to planting can help improve heavy soils. Coreopsis, Phlox and Veronica are good companion plants for Shastas.

Uses: Becky works best in the middle or rear of landscape beds and borders (Becky will grow to 36" tall). Perfect for massing - large sunny areas will be a sea of white flowers in summer, or as cut flowers to enjoy in informal summer arrangements.

Grooming tips: To encourage additional flowers, deadhead spent summer blooms. Fertilize in early spring when new growth appears.
