Hibiscus syriacus, commonly known as Rose of Sharon, is a hardy, old-fashioned deciduous shrub with new varieties for the garden or landscape. This popular summer-into-fall bloomer is tolerant of Long Island's well-known humidity and heat.
Rose of Sharon flowers best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Soil should be slightly acid and moist, yet well-drained. Note: garden soils that are heavy (clay) should be amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting. If needed, prune in late winter or early spring before growth begins.
Rose of Sharon has been a mainstay in many gardens for generations; we invite you to look for these outstanding varieties the next time you shop at Martin Viette. 'Minerva', a smaller, more compact plant (5-8' tall & nearly as wide), produces lavender flowers with a dark red eye in center. 'Ardens' will grow 8-12' tall and 6-10' wide and produce double lilac flowers. And 'Blue Satin', will grow 8 -12' tall and 6-10' wide and delight with rich blue flowers.
Grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or trained as a small tree, Rose of Sharon attracts butterflies and hummingbirds wherever it's planted. And if you garden in deer country, it's reported to be deer resistant.
Uses: as a deciduous (loses its leaves in late fall) screen or informal hedge, container plant, mass planting, accent plant in landscape beds and borders, or as an espalier on a wall or fence.
