Weeds, weeds, weeds! Keep up with any 'freeloaders' (that rob needed moisture and nutrients) in gardens and landscape beds.

It's too early to do any lawn renovation. Sit tight until mid to late August for any seeding - minor repair or major renovation.

Deadhead spent blooms on flowering annuals to encourage more color in the months ahead. Then, liquid feed flowering annuals with Blossom Booster for a needed shot-in-the-arm.

Chinch bugs feed in sunny, hot lawn areas (rarely in shade). Damage can be found along sidewalks, driveways, curbs and other sunny lawn locations. (Remember, driveways, curbs, etc. tend to retain heat - chinch bugs like hot conditions.) Although slow to start in the summer, as the temperatures climb, so do chinch bug populations. Visit us for a recommendation for their control.

It's time to scout for bagworms! Their telltale bags (with the resident caterpillar inside) should be visible, dangling from the branches of arborvitae or juniper. There are several options for dealing with this pest: hand pick and destroy; or spray with an insecticide labeled for controlling bagworm. Be sure to read and follow label directions to a tee. Hardy Hibiscus, formally known as Hibiscus moscheutos, is adored for its enormous colorful flowers. Right on cue, this perennial showstopper pleases in the mid to late summer garden. Do not confuse hardy hibiscus with tropical hibiscus. Hardy hibiscuses are just that - hardy in our zone 7. On the other hand, tropical hibiscuses are perennial in Florida, not on Long Island!

Grow hardy hibiscus in full sun and moist, but well-drained soils. If you need a few excuses to plant HH, they are tolerant of summer heat and humidity. And just as you would expect, a fresh shipment of these gorgeous hardy hibiscus can be found in our perennials yards!
