jap beetle
Beetles found now could mean grubs in the lawn later this summer.

Take extra care when gardening in extreme heat and humidity. Tackle chores early in the morning or after dinner when temperatures are a bit cooler. Wear a hat and keep the water bottle handy!

Divide overcrowded iris (if needed). Inspect iris rhizomes for any problems with rot; discard if found.

Use a soaker hose to deliver water to where it's needed most - the roots!

Check houseplants that are enjoying a summer vacation outdoors. Fertilize to encourage new growth!
summer savings
There's still time to use those coveted summer savings dollars! Now through this Sunday, July 21st, you can redeem those summer saving dollars for up to half off the purchase price on anything we sell in the store during this special Summer Savings Week event. Open daily in July - 8am to 6pm.
nutsedge
Do you know this weed? It sticks out like a sore thumb - spiky, lighter green grass that appears to grow overnight in lawns, gardens and landscape beds. Chances are you've dealt with nutsedge, aka nutgrass (Cyperus esculentus), in the past.

Snapshot: Nutsedge is a tough-to-control, persistent spreading perennial weed with long grass-like leaves that appear and grow quickly in spring and summer. Young seedlings look like grass but quickly grow to tall 3-angled stems. Nutsedge is typically lighter green than lawn grass. Uprooted plants can show 'nuts' attached to the roots. The grass dies over the winter and only the tubers remain. Keep in mind that nutgrass reproduces by tubers (nutlets), rhizomes, and seeds. If you let it go to seed, you have the potential for more weed problems!

Management options: As tempted as you might be, DO NOT hand pull (don't even think about it!), and if possible, do not move or cultivate the soil where nutgrass rhizomes or tubers (nutlets) have been found. Tubers can remain viable in the soil for many years.

Very few chemical weedkillers are labeled to control nutsedge/nutgrass. A few important points to consider: avoid treatment when air temperature is above 90 degrees F and/or on windy days. Always read and follow label directions! We can help with recommendations to control this persistent weed. Ask us the next time you shop Martin Viette.
lucifer
Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is a hot perennial for the summer garden! Commonly referred to as Montbretia, this clump forming member of the iris family is hardy in zone 6-9 (we are considered zone 7). Colder regions treat 'Lucifer' as an annual and lift the corms for winter storage.

Easy to grow, 'Lucifer' does well in full sun to part shade. Soil should be moist yet well-drained. The addition of organic matter (compost or composted manure) prior to planting is helpful.

Attractive medium green, sword-like pleated leaves rise to heights of 2-3'. But when you talk about 'Lucifer', it's all about the flowers! Enjoy arching spikes of showy brilliant red flowers on wiry stems during the summer. BTW - the flowers are hummingbird magnets. And if you enjoy cut flowers from the garden, 'Lucifer' is perfect, so plant extra for this use.
