Caladiums are adored for their amazing leaves that look like they've been hand-painted! Got shade? Caladiums are the perfect choice.

How to grow: shady spots with warm soil; soil needs to be moist (do not allow the soil to dry out completely!), but well draining (soils that are overly wet will cause the tubers to rot). Although caladiums are not heavy feeders, you should fertilize a few times during the growing season - liquid or granular - according to package directions.

Uses: landscape beds, pots, planters or window boxes. Caladiums can transition inside (bring in before the first fall frost) if you supply adequate sunlight & humid conditions. If left outdoors, these tropical tubers will not survive the winter on Long Island.

It's time to sound the trumpets for Trumpet vine, aka Campsis radicans! This vigorous, very hardy vine (zones 4-11; we are considered zone 7) blooms spring through fall with orangey-red, trumpet-like flowers. (Trumpet vine is the perfect common name for this plant.) Best planted in sunny locations with well-drained soils; then stand back and watch the hummingbirds flock to it! Trumpet vine is well-suited for arbors, pergolas, or fencing.

Are you all ears? Elephant ears, popular with gardeners of all ages, make dramatic additions to the garden or landscape. Grown from bulbs, elephant ears dazzle with their interesting leaves (leaf size and color depends on the variety). Best for sunny spots and well-drained soils, EE can be grown in pots and planters, or planted in the garden. Helpful info: EE are not hardy on Long Island; they would have to be dug right after frost and stored in a frost-free location until spring. Another option: bring potted EE into the home in late September and grow as a sunny houseplant during the winter months. The big question - will you have the room to grow it as an indoor plant?
